I have no problem with you coming over to chat and hang out with your 13 year old kid while I make asorted veggie garnishes for you to take to a picnic tomorrow…I can use the cash you paid me with. I only spent 3 years worth of evenings and weekends learning to cook professionally.
I do mind said iron chef wannabe grabbing for my fairly expensive knives…dropping one point first onto my ceramic tile floor and breaking it…I really dont have $200US to replace my knife because it is now over an inch shorter than it started out…I do mind said wannabe grabbing yet another knife and trying to do the chop really fast technique on a stalk of celery despite repeated orders to put MY knives down and SIT DOWN and I really mind cleaning up the blood when you get cut because all you are used to is ginsu knives and you have not one clue on properly using a real knife with a good edge…
I really mind knowing I am going to have to deal with my insurance company raising my premiums because you can keep your little darlings ass planted on her barstool and watching where she won’t get hurt or damage MY tools.
If their kid broke your knife, they (Or the kid) should replace it, you shouldn’t have to. I can’t believe that after she broke one, she went for another.
Are your insurance premiums going to go up because you are going to them to get your knife replaced, or is this chick asking that you pay for her medical bills? Who got cut, mother or child? I’d surely counter sue and ask for the cost of the knife and repairs to the floor tile if she did take me to court.
The idiot kid got cut trying to do a fast chop on a stalk of celery, like one of the celebrity chefs on food tv…not a particularly bad cut as it goes, I have done worse to myself but they did go to the ER for it as it is the correct way to go with a good fingerchop. Not that anything came off mind you, but a down to the bone slice along the side of a finger, and hands are so damn veinous and bleed like no tomorrow.
With the industrial type terra cotta tiles, nothing short of dropping a lead brick on the floor will damage them, all the damage was to a knife that you haven’t been able to purchase in this country <fwiw, a real no shit 12 inch diamant sabatier square handle. Made one whole year in Thierry as an experimental type.>
It is called in as a no fault claim, but realistically my premiums will be going up. I guess I will replace it with a regular 12 inch classique diamant sabatier, but it is NOT the same as a 25 year old friend. My knives were almost the only thing I bailed out of a really bad relationship with, anybody who cooks professionally understands our knives are like our family=(
IANAL, but the mother refused to control her child, correct? You were verbally trying to stop the child from playing with a dangerous object, which is pretty well all you could do, AFAIK. (It being frowned upon to physically restrain the child, even to prevent self harm if you are not the parent, or another public worker.)
I’d say that the mother (again IANAL) possibly took the “liability” onto herself when she did not take the steps to prevent the child from playing with dangerous objects. I’d make them take me to court, after consulting a lawyer to see if that’s wise. It might not be, you might be liable no matter what. We can hope though. It might be worth checking into, you might be pleasantly suprised, and if it turns out you do have to pay, well, you’re prepared for that anyway. Good luck.
LOL, Actually, I am a licensed insurance provider in Connecticut, and when I was still employed essentially I 'sold" myself my policy <ok, I changed from the original provider when we bought the house to this one because it actually was better coverage and less expensive and one of the agents in the office did the actual paperwork> so I am pretty aware of what is going to happen. <and I am also a paralegal, so I can check up on the current status quo monday when I hit the law library in Norwich. >
Public Service Announcement - In Connecticut, each courthouse is required to maintain a public access law library, and wouldn’t you know there is a very eager librarian just waiting to pounce to your help? grin … don’t know offhand about any other state, you might want to check it out=)
