I Pit overly liberal people

I simply cannot stand people who feel the need to bang on incessently about how everything is an opinion. I KNOW!< you do not need to tell me that everything i say is just an opinion. All i’ve read while watching these boards is some trying to make a point and rather than someone who disagrees replying with what they actually think on the subject they just reply ; wow asserting your opinion - that’ll earn you friends ; its just a load of crap and if people would stop and realise that political correctness is the spawn of the devil (alongside excel) then we wouldn’t have such hang ups as people having to say milkperson, or postperson, its pathetic.
P.S. if someone replies with any comment resembling -its only an opinion etc i will scream

This is your first post?!? Welcome to the SDMB, I guess.

I’ll tell you what I’m sick of, since this is the pit…

I’m sick of people whining about Political Correctness. I mean, good lord, how long ago was that even remotely original or meaningful?
PC, these days, exists far more as a mythical whipping boy for people to rail against than it does as an actual meaningful force in society. (This may not be true in certain enclaves such as college campuses.)

Not that I’m a fan of over-PCness more than anyone else is, but it’s way more common these days to hear people say “heh heh… what’s up with PC? What’s next, calling left-handed people left-handed-Americans? heh heh… I’m so funny” or “It may not be PC, but… (insert extremely racist remark here)” than to actually here someone seriously propose an even remotely PC opinion.

Well that is just your opinion and I suppose you are entitled to it…

Welcome aboard! Right into the Pit, that’s a pretty grand entrance. You might want to take a gander at the other Pit thread about PC and brace for the barrage. Get ready to spend some quality time at your keyboard, getting to know all manner of wonderful new epithets for your overly comfortable white, hetero, male, traditonally unoppressed, whinging ass. Or maybe they’ll just pass you over, the ultimate snipe. Not bad, but next time put a little more mustard on that rant, you know jazz it up a bit. Name names, cites, gratuitous swearing. Have a nice stay(seriously I mean that, what you cant see me winking?)

I see its already here…damn that was fast.

Pointing out that something is an opinion = liberalism? Never heard that one before.

Would you mind if I point out that your username seems to contain a spelling error? I know that this is irrelevant to the present subject, but unless it is an intentional error I feel you should be made aware of it.

Well, I hardly see the point of this OP. It’s only an opinion.

Is there any reason why I should take the OP’s opinion seriously?

By the way, who the fuck says “milkperson”? As far as I know, the occupation of milk delivery is now a distant cultural relic, gone forever from our present society.

“Postperson”?

Do you have a problem with “postal carrier”?

Don’t even bother answer; I don’t want to know.

[Dude]Well, that’s just like, your opinion, man. [/Dude]

I agree with the OP.

Excel IS the spawn of the devil.

I don’t see phrases like “mail carrier” or “firefighter” or “flight attendant” as PC. I see that as simple politeness. And they’re not clumsy and stupid sounding, just an acknowledgement that both sexes do these jobs these days.

PC is shit like “differently abled.” And you just KNOW that the people who obsess about “people-first language” have no idea how fucking STUPID and CONDESCENDING it sounds to a lot of other people. For God’s sake, I’d rather be called a midget cripple than “a person who is vertically challenged and handicapable!”

That’s the sort of PC that could easily be applied to me. It’s EASY to be conscendingly PC when you aren’t on the receiving end. It pisses me off. Yeah, I’m real short. Yeah, I’m disabled. Just SAY IT ALREADY.

My sister is handicapped and I would much rather hear people refer to her as such instead of calling her a retard, which has unfortunately gained some really negative connotations over the years despite originally being intended as a non-inflammatory phrase. For this, and other reasons, I am glad we have political correctness. It has allowed us to get away from some of the more derogatory phrases out there that exist for no other reason than to belittle people.

Abusing it to try to appear as nice as possible is stupid, clumsy, and ignorant though. If I were to hear someone refer to her as handicaple, I would know they’re most likely thinking “My god, what a poor little retard” and just trying to cover their thoughts with some stupidly ignorant term that’s supposed to placate me.

But I can honestly say, I’ve never ran into any behaviour like that and I agree with whoever said above that “over PCness” is mostly a thing of the past and is something that people to bitch about without any real reason.

Say, maybe this is off-topic, but does anyone know anything about those four lengthy screams I heard a little while ago?

Too fucking right. Yes, it can be excessive, but I’m sick of asshats whining because “Political correctness” dictates that they can no longer act like a jackass.

Oh, the gooieness I’ve been talked to with sometimes is just nauseating, I can promise you. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, GAG.

I agree that the over-PCness has backed off somewhat, but it’s still damn annoying, and if my ranting in the Pit about it being annoying pisses you off, too damn bad.

oh my God, WORD, and in some cases you could replace ‘extremely racist remark’ with ‘joke about the Holocaust/something else completely inappropriate’. people complain about PC when others criticise them for saying this kind of thing, it pisses me off so much.

One particular PC bit I hate is the term “homicide bomber” for “suicide bomber”. The fact that someone’s trying to kill someone else is evident in the word “bomber”. The people who thought that up are trying to dissociate the concept of “bombing” from the concept of “killing”.

“Chairperson”, “flight attendant”, and the like I have no problem with. I’ve never heard the terms “milkperson” or “postperson” before the OP.

“It’s only an opinion”… everybody’s entitled to their opinion. What I have problems with is the fact that a lot of people in high places have extreme opinions that they want made into laws. And before you set up the strawman saying that “murder is wrong is only an opinion” or some other shit like that, let me just call bullshit in advance. Not murdering, raping, assaulting, or stealing from innocent people is part of a universal moral code that’s been around as long as the human race. While, strictly speaking, it may be an opinion; it’s also an opinion of just about everyone, except for the sociopaths and some people horribly misguided by their government or their religion.

Excel? Sure, she’s spastic, but she’s cute. Hardly the spawn of the devil.
