I Pit "someecards"

I probably used the wrong phrase, but imho, you shouldn’t be saying things like, “I made so many sacrifices for your freedom” and such. It makes it sound like you’re fishing for compliments and wanting everyone to thank you (generic you).

 Or running for office.

Yes! One of my friends posted this shite a couple of weeks ago. I hate all that “we had a much better childhood than kids today” rubbish. My kids are going to be able to do all the fun stuff I did as a kid AND they will have loads of much cooler stuff to do that didn’t exist when I was a kid.

I especially hate the idea that kids can’t play outside these days because they’ll be abducted by paedophiles within 10 minutes, when there is simply no evidence that it’s any less safe than it was 30 or 40 years ago.

Got time for a mini rant? Good, then.

It’s not so much that these little postcard meme thingys make it seem like what people post is more meaningful or important, it’s that this just makes it look like they have something to say* at all*.

I scroll through my newsfeed, post after post after post, and from what I can tell, nobody on Facebook has a single thought of their own. FB has degenerated into people just posting other people’s thoughts (usually misattributed quotes) and clicking “like.” We just like other people’s thoughts these days; nobody has any of their own.

I expressly refuse to post this shit. If I have something to say on FB, I type it out, using my very own words. Novel idea, I know. I’m a FB Maverick. Watch out. I have my very own thinky things right inside my head, and I can tell you what they are without putting someone else’s words on a postcard.

I agree with you except I think you’re missing that most people posting that are complaining about the notion that the kids are unsafe outside now not actually complaining that kids are less safe outside than they were.

Those cards are the worst. Posted by juveniles poorly dressed in sophisticates’ clothing - too ignorant to realize they have nothing to be arrogant about.

I’m friends with a lot of adults significantly younger than me, like 18 years younger. They post/share a lot of that kind of thing, too, especially fixating on shows from Nickelodeon or the Disney Channel that are about ten years old, or video games roughly bracketed between SNES/Gen and N64/PS1. “Remember ‘Rocko’s Modern Life’?!?! Hit SHARE if you GREW UP ON IT!!! :D” “OMG, hit LIKE if you remember the first time you heard Link play the OCARINA!!!”

I think those are used by ‘Like’ whores and ‘Share’ sluts to increase their pages’ popularity ranking. It’s a lot like glurge - cheap, sappy, PHONY sentimentality - which, for some reason is very popular on FB. “Share if you can remember drinking from a hose!” WTF?? Don’t we still have hoses - go drink from one if you want!

That’s true of my FB experience too, and I’m also guilty. My excuse is that my FB friends are so diverse. Some are actual friends, some are relatives I’m close to but some I barely know, and some are friends just because I’m too chickenshit to drop them. So I’m thinking, “What can I write that would be of slight interest to all these people/won’t piss off the fundies/won’t get me in trouble at work/won’t get me struck from grandma’s will.”

On the subject of stupid FB memes, how about “This month has 5 Fridays/Sundays/Thursdays. It only happens every 723 years!” and “I bet you can’t think of a fish/food/animal that has the letter A”.

I’m stealing this for my facebook status.

Hey, since this resurrected zombie thread has basic “things we hate that are posted all over Facebook,” the worst are the stupid ‘Quizzes’.

You know, the “Name a movie that doesn’t have the letter ‘A’ in it. It’s harder than you think!” To which, I can immediately think of at least 10 examples without even trying. Does ANYONE think those are hard? I tried to get a counter-meme going by making one that said “Name a word without the letter ‘A’ in it that describes people who think these stupid Facebook quizzes are hard.” Of course, no one shared that.

Whatever, I was doing it in 07.

“This content is currently unavailable”

Wow, that really is horrible.

Every time I see a status update all I hear in the background is “PLEASE GIVE ME ATTENTION.”

Narcissim

What…Well, I never

Do the voices in your head ever say anything else? Like, say, if you see a house do you ever hear things like “that house would look great… ON FIRE.”

Because I hate that too.

No I mostly have nice voices.

This. Particularly when it has the juvenile “I know who will and who won’t…” garbage.

Double this… plus: nice way to drive off the people who are most likely to make donations and support the real causes; since they find this stuff so disturbing they really aren’t going to appreciate having vivid depictions popping up on their feed.

And ohmygod could you please stop projecting your human fear of death on to these abused and suffering animals and instead concern yourself with alleviating their suffering? Months of agonizing and expensive rehab vs. a quick painless death really strikes you as the best application of your concern and resources? Good lord…

It’s been interesting seeing who are the hardcore narcissists among the people I know. I’m fascinated by the people who, without the slightest bit of self-consciousness, never comment upon or like anything that anyone else posts, ever, and what they post is confined exclusively to things about themselves and what they are doing. They don’t even post about things that interest them, assuming anything does outside themselves.

Someone I care about is a hardcore narcissist, though, and what I’ve learned is to have sympathy for her… the best one can do is “act as if” - if you really aren’t genuinely interested in anything or anyone other than yourself, how is that your fault? It’s your burden, really… can any of us force ourselves to be genuinely interested in things that don’t interest us? I know I can’t, I’m just really lucky that I’m interested in an enormously wide variety of things. That don’t include team sports, or cars. And no amount of wishing or wanting would make me be interested in those things. Imagine feeling that way about nearly everything in the world except yourself??? Yikes.

Er…

I actually had someone unfriend me because I didn’t share one of those once. I mean, whatever, it was some guy I was friends with in elementary school who couldn’t write without text speak and ended every post, no matter the topic, with some variation of “Praise the Lord! I love my girl so much!” But I didn’t know anybody actually unfriended people for no reposting that stuff. Weird.

Every year or so, though, I do end up feeling required to just post a parody of a Facebook meme, though.

Guy doesn’t sound like much of a loss, really.
