LHOD --absolutely not. Talking to colleagues is not considered “gossip”; speaking of pt’s issues to laypeople or out in public can and will get a nurse fired.
Teaching may well have it’s own rules and customs–all I can do is speak from my own experience as a sub. I heard no child denigrated in the lounges, but I did hear plenty of venting, very similiar to what goes on in a nurse’s lounge. And plenty of support and positive things as well are heard in both places. YMMV.
furlib --no one here has advocated for this kid to get off scot free.
I’ve seen plenty of medical-type persons talking about their patients on this board. They don’t give identifying details, is all, so their ass is covered. There are also plenty of teachers who post about their students. Do a search for “plagiarism”.
Teaching definitely does have its own rules: the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act heavily restricts discussion of student information. As a professor explained it to me, discussing students without giving identifying information is okay, but discussing students with colleagues outside of a professional setting can get you in real trouble.
