I pit the attempt of a mod (not here) to "moderate" on another board

[again nothing to do with the SDMB-I’ll try to write this with as few details as possible so as to protect the guilty-me included]

I like many of you have other realms I patrol. A certain mod team for a certain game came out with what looked to me like a very high quality mod-only to scan the various forums for this game and not see a single post on it, when otherwise you’d think there would be multi-page threads on it. Naturally this piqued my curiousity (even tho I don’t actually own this game-long story, but the mod if available probably would have had me go out and get it as it had things I’ve been waiting a long time for in a game like this).

I went to a subsidiary board (1/10th the size of the other one) and posted what turned out to be some half-assed speculations on my part (yes this is partly my fault) in my typical imitable style. Eventually another thread did open up on the big board, and I chimed in there with a couple of thoughts which probably weren’t phrased properly. When the creators of the mod finally posted with the facts, I immediately apologized to both in PMs and washed my hands of the entire affair.

Meanwhile tho at the small board a moderator from the big board decided to pay a visit and deliver me a stern dressing down. Okay, I deserved that, apologized to him and told everyone that I am dropping the subject. Or so I thought. He decided to keep harping away, even tho he doesn’t moderate at this small board and has no real business coming there and continuing to blather away (the fact that both of my primary speculations were essentially correct anyway isn’t germane at this point, just thought I’d point that out).

The moderators at this big board have had a long reputation of being overly sensitive and autocratic and playing favorites. If he wants to officially warn me at his board, that is fine. But he had no business invading the territory of another board and continuing to spew vitriol after I had already decided to move on.

If anyone cares enough to want any specifics, PM me. Just had to vent.

I got banned the other day. Woo hoo! There was this one thread and someone posted what to me seemed like a decent, polite, innocent question but the resident 13-year-old nerds chimed in with their “URthesuxors, dont B Stupud!”

This one kid speld “whether” as weather so I corrected him and told him if he’s going to flame he should probably at least use a spell checker. He came back and berated me for being an elitist English speaker and not everyone in the world speaks English. I told him if he’s going to berate someone for asking a legitimate, honest question his misspellings in his post make him look like the petulant, illiterate ass he probably is.

I immediately got banned, while this kid gets to keep running around the boards telling everyone they’re teh stoopit for having an opinion contrary to his, or asking a question.

Getting banned there didn’t bother me the slightest little bit.

I have no idea of what you said here. What’s a “mod-only”, etc.

Should have been a comma, not a dash, if you are being a strict grammarian (like I myself am sometimes).

Speld?

Spelt?

Spellified?

A few years back on UseNet, someone who has a moderator position on another board and a few ounces of power in her microReligion pretty much decided that she was the Queen of the Roost because of these two facts.

The odd part was that if there was any heat directed in her direction, she’d spend days at a time screaming about how no one controlled the place, no one could tell her what to do and of course, how much of an arrogant control freak the other party had to be to try to tell her what they could do in that place.

She never seemed to notice that she was more guilty of that behavior than anyone in the place.

At the same time, like every other newsgroup, there was a constant question about why no one visited anymore. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, I speld it that way on perpus.

Phew! For a minute there I thought you were trying to sneak in a portmanteau reference to a spavined gelding and I just wanted to be on the lookout.

I’ve been banned from a few boards over the past few years, starting with the Ann Coulter chatroom on EZBoard. Most recently, I was banned from a right wing messageboard with a Catholic clergyman for a mod. He was complaining about how immoral public schools were for teaching sex ed in schools, so I brought up the church abuse scandals. I didn’t last very long.

No big deal.

Should I even ask? – What the heck is the “Ann Coulter chatroom” like?

To John DiFool: “mod,” in the OP means “modification”, as in, “modification to a pre-existing game,” right?

I think this is confusing me too. I think some of the time he is talking about "moderators’ “moderating” over “modifications” and it’s utterly mystifying me.

And it also sounds like everyone in this thread who was being banned or warned deserved it.

Or perhaps the British “Mod Movement”? :stuck_out_tongue: I am still confused. OP can you translate your OP into english, please?

I think it has something to do with Peter wanting to drive Linc’s car.

They called it a chat room. It was actually a messageboard with a separate live chat option.

No idea how it is now. I was banned years ago, and the new one requires an ISP-based email address, which is not an option for me when dealing with unstable personalities.

Back when I was there, it was pretty fucked up. Our mod was a couple of cans short of a sixpack. He advocated the second American Revolution and talked about how kids and adults who were HIV positive should either be separated from society or made to wear an identifying marker so that others would know to “take care” around them (his words). The hell of it was that at the time, he was taking classes to be a substitute elementary school teacher.

Others in the room advocated internment of Arab muslims until we could either let them back in if they displayed unconditional loyalty to the country (by which they seemed to mean government) or deport them, revoking their citizenship if necessary. When I pointed out that not all Arabs were muslim or muslims Arab, and that quite a few Muslims were caucasian or at least caucasian looking, that threw them, but they quickly modified their beliefs to say OK, intern all Arabs and all muslims. They seemed to think that all Arabs and all Muslims were guilty until proven innocent, and they seemed to think about this quite a bit. I didn’t really last long once I started posting. I was there just to watch the train wrecks.

Actually, the Ann Coulter chat room was not the worst MB I’d ever belonged to. For years, I hung out at another board which was much worse. The owner and mod was an unemployed alcoholic, and forget about mentally unstable, this guy was fucking bonkers. He advocated death for all Muslims wherever they may be and held celebratory threads when an earthquake killed thousands of Muslims, including children. With regards to the children, he used to say that “nits made lice.” That was pretty much the extent of his argument. He also called Lincoln a douchebag and wished that the south would rise again. He called all cops assholes, but would ban anyone who talked against the military.

One day he got drunk and shut the board down. A few months later, he restarted it without explanation, but then EZboard shut it down for violating its terms (Apparently the mod had started actually making death threats, saying he was going to be celebrating some holiday by walking around randomnly killing Arabs.). He started up the board again last year under a different name but with the same old spiel. He posted religiously every day until late February this year when he logged out of his account in the late evening. He has not been heard from since. I originally though rehab, but since the three month mark passed, I’m thinking ol’ Smelly MacFuckup landed himself in jail.

And I’m not going to tell you the name of the board or the mod, so don’t even ask. If you know what to look for, you could probably find both yourselves, but take my advice and just leave it the hell alone. Chances are you deal with enough crazy people in real life.

Quick correction: He might have had some sort of part time computer employment. Whatever work he might have had, he was still an alcoholic psychopath.

I’ve been banned from 2 other boards and it’s all the SDMBs fault.

On this MB you get used to talking with intelligent people, you go to another board and the sheer fucking ignorance and stupidity of some of the posters pissed me off.

After pointing out that" noone" is not a word and should be written as" no-one" I was called a smartarse.

I retaliated by calling them thick fuckers, I got banned, no big deal

Agreed.

At the SDMB I get *annoyed * by psycho basement dwellers. At the other boards I get *banned * by psycho basement dwellers.

Yeah can be short for “modification” or “moderator”. I always spelled it out if it was the last one, otherwise should be clear from the context.

In any event past history now, if someone wants to open a “moderating horrors that I was a personal victim of” thread that’s okay, but this one can be closed now, mods…err moderators.
