I Pit the Mother of the Texas school shooter

Well I agreed with him about the statement, and you apparently do too. Yes the OP is way over the top but I thought that was largely performative outrage for the Pit – people use expletives here to describe, I dunno, a creaky door, or whatever is winding them up today.

Is the misogynist slur “cunt”? Because I actually hear men called that more often than women. It’s obviously a female body part, but I don’t really see it as being about women.

In trying to insult someone, they are called ‘a female body part’ and you don’t see how that is demeaning of women? Of course it is about women. Call people ‘asshole’ instead. Almost everybody has one of those.

Yes, “cunt” is considered misogynist in the US. I’ve heard it most often used aimed at women. Referring to men as cunts is something I associate with Britain and Europe.

Ah thanks for the clarification. Yeah, here in the UK it’s almost always aimed at men, and is pretty much interchangeable with “dick”, ironically.
(Although it is much stronger; you can’t jokingly refer to a friend as a cunt).

People do that in the UK pretty regularly, but I agree that here it has no connection with women when used as an insult.

Male and female body parts are both used as insults towards males and females fairly evenly in my experience.
Do you don’t think calling someone a “dick” is demeaning towards men?

Touche! LOL

Sorry, lady, but the “reasons” to which you are referring are irrelevant when measured against the horror of his crimes. As far as judging him is concerned, he will forever be judged as an evil monster and deservedly so. Slaughtering children wholesale kind of results in that sort of thing.

These are the words (possibly poorly translated) of a distraught mother who discovered her son has done some horrible acts. The question isn’t about what her son did, it’s about whether she should be given consideration for her words during a time of amazing stress and grief.

As a man I would feel insulted but not in any way demeaned by being called a dick.

That term doesn’t have nearly the kind of baggage and doesn’t float on a long history of gender oppression.

It’s the same reason there is no equivalent for the N-word against white people.

Yes, I do think it is an insult and intended to be demeaning. I don’t do it.

I think ‘jerk’ works well enough, when needed.

As you can see by the post below yours, that response is in no way universal.

In some cultures the same words have completely different usage and power.

This is all something of a diversion though so I’ll take no further part.

As noted, it’s a diversion.

The OP is openly American and uses standard American English with American cultural and stylistic baggage, no matter how the word may be used elsewhere.

It was deliberately provocative and misogynistic usage by the OP, who possibly thought the rest of the board would have little enough regard for the mother of a mass murderer to the extent it would ignore or overlook the language. Basically, OP is at minimum an asshat looking to score cheap points.

Your OP is self-serving in that attempts to redirect outrage to the parent instead of the gun store owner who sold the kid all those weapons and ammo and the police who did fuck all on the scene (well, they did attack a couple parents I suppose).

Gun store owners can get fucked with a cactus.

This is not quite the perfect self-pitting, since there were a couple of half-hearted attempts to partially agree with OP along the way. But it’s pretty close, I think OP deserves some respect for that. It’s really quite difficult to get everyone to disagree with you on anything at all. I mean I’m fairly sure a thread on “Hitler’s Good Points” would get some traction.

Assuming the sale was perfectly legal – and I have no idea whether it complied with Texas statutes, if any in fact exist – was there anything about the sale that would have raised red flags? I mean, maybe it’s not all that uncommon for an 18-year-old in Texas to save up and buy a couple of high-end firearms, much like kids in my day saved up to buy a kick-ass stereo.

He did kill Hitler, so there’s that going for him…

Yup. How the rest of the world perceives it is irrelevant.

Also see the previous Pit thread for the OP where similar complaints were made.

To be fair: We wouldn’t have all these school shootings if you libs would allow us to beat our children and actually teach them that violence is not a solution to problems.

This precise details are well documented elsewhere, but he went and bought ~$10,000 worth of semi-auto rifles, handguns, high capacity mags and ammo within a couple days of his 18th birthday. I am certain this was legal considering it’s Texas, that doesn’t make it responsible or right. There’s a reason why people have long been calling for longer waiting periods, increasing the minimum age for gun ownership and limiting the amounts of ammo that can be purchased in a given timeframe.

It’s fucking ignorant to say that “guns haven’t changed, people have”. It’s a god damn lie first of all. Guns have definitely changed a lot. Access to guns has expanded a lot. Regulations have been rolled back a lot. Most importantly, people’s relationship with guns has changed. Ignoring this fact continues to be complicit in the murder of children…which the OP is in my view.
