Even if we did somehow discover which one has a lock on The Truth, why should we make his “brand” the law of the land, in a country that expressly forbids “Establishment”?

This is exactly it. How do you think ordained Catholic priests could rape young boys and still have the temerity to minister? They confess, are assigned and do their penance, receive the sacrament and are thus redeemed by Christ. Then they go bugger another boy and run back through the repentance cycle, on and on and on. BTW, one might try to make a case that Bush’s decision to let Bin Laden live was the wiser course. The terrorist was afraid to entertain visitors or communicate electronically so ineffective as leader; and Obama’s raid put American commandos at risk, and offended the pro-terrorist ally that was harboring the villain.

Of course, a wall already surrounded the city preventing the Saracen pirates from entering Rome.

They invaded Sicily. Once that island was taken they rented out troops to various Italian states as mercenaries. I will agree with all of that except the “mind your own business” part. He still thinks that homosexual activity is a sin, he just thinks its really important to welcome homosexuals into the church:

This is in direct contract to the apocalyptic proclamations of Pope Benedict who thought that even civil unions that didn’t involve any whiff of the sacrament of marriage had to be opposed. Pope Francis opposes gay marriage (kinda vague on civil unions) but it seems like he thinks there are bigger fish to fry.

Its mostly just a shift in tone but tone is important. For example, the shift in tone means that gay organizations can now march in the St. Patricks Day Parade in NYC (a sore spot for the gay community in NYC).

Pope Francis still thinks abortion is a grave sin. But he has given every priest the ability to remove censure for abortion even if their bishop has not given them that power. This is mostly symbolic because most bishops have extended this ability to all their priests. But it is also a shift in tone and tone can be important.

He is referrring to the scandal created by the hypocritical Catholics, not that he is agreeing with the statement.

He might not have explicitly endorsed this statement, but everything he said quoted by Reuters implies that he does.

ETA: ok, you have a point, the pope certainly doesn’t prefer a generic atheist to a hypocritical Catholic, but it is implied that it means a decent atheist doing good works. But that may be only my interpretation.
