Yup. Pretty much any majority white rural area not in the northeast is like this. For whatever reason, I don’t think rural areas in new england are generally this bad (but they have some issues).

And I agree. These people have gigantic egos. If you aren’t from the area and haven’t met them, it can be shocking how superior some of them can consider themselves. They view themselves as the hardest working, most independent, most resilient, most authentic people in the country. Which is ironic, since they are totally dependent on the urban areas they disdain to pay their bills and run the society they depend on.

Exactly. If I want to hear the kind of bullshit described in the OP, I don’t have to go to Alabama; I just have to drive over the Cascades to eastern Oregon. Actually, I only have to drive out of Portland a few miles; basically a day trip to cluelessness.

I’m from the South. The southwestern corner of Virginia, near the Tennesse, West Virgina, North Carolina borders. Near my hometown that stupid boogaloo movement has some followers. Fucking paranoid idiots who think they are going to rise up and fight the tyrannical new Virginia goverment that wants to ban assault weapons.

Sometimes I wish the entire region, from West Virginia and the western half of Virginia, all the way down south, excluding Florida, would secede.

Take your fucking backwoods, backward beliefs, your racism, your misogyny, your suppression of women’s rights, your “What a friend we have in Jeee-zuss” beliefs, your high teen birth rate, your low literacy rates, your high poverty levels, your “right to work” laws, your infrastructure built by the tyrannical federal government, and most importantly, your electoral college votes.

Virginia is blue as long as you don’t fuck with our guns too much. How important is an assault weapons ban to you? Because we will lose the Virginia senate and house over it. We will lose Virginia over one of the stupidest forms of gun control that are currently being considered.

North Carolina could go blue but not if you fuck with their guns. Assault weapons are ubiquitous now. They might even reach the threshhold laid out in Heller for constitutional protection. North Carolina will go red if you fuck with their guns. Most swing states can be nudged to the right if you start grabbing at their guns.

You lose enough of those states and your desire to pass one of the stupidest forms of gun control will result in losing the white house and a conservative replacement for RBG and maybe Breyer (both in their 80s). Then things like abortion are suddenly on the table for serious consideration. Thomas is only 71, 6 and 7 years younger than Biden and Sanders, the rest of the justices is in their 50s and 60s.

You don’t like it? Then get a constitutional amendment. Because that constitution that explicitly preserves the right to keep and bear arms also protects the “penumbral” right to an abortion.

And between you and me, if Trump wins another term, you may start to wonder if the right to keep and bear arms doesn’t have some use after all.
