I think the most disturbing thing from this thread so far is the thought of Ogre hunched over his computer, fantasizing about the graphic details of an infant’s gruesome death so that he can type those details up and use them to really pwn a bunch of people on an Internet message board.

I understand. It’s just tiresome. People post about things for a lot of reasons. Perhaps the incident resonates with them for a specific reason. Maybe they know of a child who was treated badly, and it burns them. Maybe they’re just astonished by the deep darkness that’s in us. I dunno. I just I, for one, was pretty outraged by the incident, probably because I’m the father of a very young child, and naturally, the first thing I thought of was this guy in all that agony, with no hope, and no one to care.
The Pit is an appropriate venue for those who are interested in expressing outrage to do so. Yes, it is also frequently used as the SDMB’s version of /b/.
I just sometimes wish that people who are RO-ed out would simply leave a thread like this to the ones who are interested in the subject matter for its own sake, such as DSeid. Instead, it seems like they assume that, because they are not interested in the outrage expressed, the same must hold true for everyone, and thus, the thread has no use to anyone (such as those who simply post something along the lines of “Be careful, OP. That’s a controversial position you’re taking…”). Just…why?
I don’t expect that anyone will particularly care about my opinion on this, and some days, I may even be guilty of doing the same thing. It’s just that, on this particular day, on this subject, it got my dander up a bit.
Some people thought Gilbert Gottfried’s Japanese girlfriend joke was funny; some didn’t. Some laughed with Ann Coulter joking about lynching people; some didn’t find it too funny. Some just don’t get the joke when they are prank lynched. Go figure. Some people.
Some think that telling dead baby jokes in response to a report of a possibly psychotic woman’s killing of her baby is funny; some don’t. Some think that whether or not she was in the midst of a psychosis, that perhaps could have been identified and treated with a tragedy prevented if she was not poor and/or afraid to seek help because she was illegal is an uninteresting question and can only think so far as to hope that she kills herself soon, the bitch. Some of us think otherwise. Some think making Holocaust jokes is fine humor, after all, how much outrage can one have, you can’t keep saying it was horrible so you might as well make jokes about Jews in ashtrays of German cars. Those are the only two choices.

Sure, it sometimes happens, and it’s a testament to the Dope when it does (as is an ugly, pointless dogpile, but in a totally different way.) And if you’re all tired of expressing outrage, if you simply can’t do it anymore, well, don’t. Leave the thread to people who have things to add.
I know it may appear muddled, but I’m not really even disgusted by the dead baby jokes. Those are simply juvenile - black humor at its least effective and most childish. Who cares? It’s really the act of completely shitting all over a thread, of actually expending energy to tell an OP about how little they really care, when there really are subjects implicit in the story that would make a valid discussion, that I find pointless.
Of course, right about now, some will come in and say that it’s the PIT, dammit, as if that means anything.

Dude, nobody in this thread, including the OP, has thrown a baby off of a parking structure, known anyone who’s throwing a baby off of a parking structure, been thrown off of a parking structure as a baby, seen a baby be thrown from a parking structure and, before this thread, nobody has probably even heard of a baby being thrown from a parking structure. We might as well have heard about a parent who threw her baby from ye olde parking structure in the 17th century. So we’re not exactly being callous asshats for not tiptoeing around in the thread as if we were at the baby’s funeral.
The situation is so incredibly fucked up that all you can do is laugh. It’s not any different in my mind than telling a Holocaust joke, which I’m sure you’re just as outraged by.
