No, it is. It really, truly is.
I can understand that, Ogre, but at the same time, I don’t see anything wrong with dark humor. It’s not for everyone, naturally, but I don’t think people who make such jokes are doing so because they’re sociopaths. It’s just a way of coping with all the horror we see.
(BTW, how are the little one’s ears? Is she still having infections?)
The thread is repulsive, yet Ogre cannot look away!
Look away!
Look away!
Look away, kid-be spam.
That’s it then? No reply to any points raised? Just a ‘nuh-uh, yeah-huh’ bullshit waste of 1s and 0s? Fucking shit on a shingle. That was bad and you should feel bad.
Indeed, sir.
They’re fine, thanks for asking. We’ll see this winter, though. Christ, I hope we aren’t pulled sideways through that shit again.
Nope. I’ve made my point to the extent it’s going to be made. Consider your quoted remarks, though, in the context of the thread.
Now, do please go on with the usual Pit posts. It’s de rigueur, and I suppose it always was.
I guess I have missed those threads. BTW, your response seems to imply that you detected outrage in my response. No outrage. A little incredulity.
But yes you’d be right to believe that I would find racist jokes objectionable as well. And if made in my presence would object. I do feel that silence in the face of hateful humor implicitly endorses the beliefs. Still, there’d be no “outrage”. Dead baby jokes? Haven’t been my sense of humor in, well something like 45 years, but I can’t get too upset over them. Wishing death on someone who may be very ill and whose actions may be as much a result of our system’s failings than her being “evil” or “a bitch”? That bothers me some. The fact that no one is interested in a serious discussion of what I think of as a serious subject? It’s the Pit, such discussion is not be expected here, juvenile behaviors are. I am free to open up a thread elsewhere if I really want that discussion.
I made a brief Google search and couldn’t find the main one I know of. It had some pretty twisted shit in it and went on for like 15 pages if I recall correctly. I hope someone else has better luck finding and linking to it so that you can lose respect for any Dopers you still thought were decent people.

Fine then. To each his own.
fixes his white bow tie
Awesome. Three of those five are new to me.
I laughed.
If baby had landed right next to a nurse on a cig break, now that woulda been classic.
I’m not sure if this is brilliant or a mistake.
Decent people shouldn’t post here.
Black humour has long been a healthy response to terrible situations (it probably started when we were still swinging from the trees). Would I find a Holocaust joke funny? Of course I would (I mean, if it was a funny joke). That doesn’t mean I don’t think the Holocaust was a terrible thing. The two are only slightly related, which you don’t seem to get, Ogre. It isn’t about thinking throwing babies from parkades is funny; it’s choosing to laugh instead of cry and tear our hair out and rend our garments.
Fuck it. Not worth it. Think what you want. I have too much work to do to dick around with this today.
That’s what she said!
Enjoy,
Steven
She threw the baby off a parking garage, not off the side of a boat.
Maybe she was practicing her throwing technique for a planned boating trip?
Good, 'cause we don’t come down to where you work and knock the dick out of your mouth! <canned laughter>
In case anyone actually cares about the details of the real case, some are now coming out.
The woman was apparently considered by all who knew her to be a wonderful mother and very doting on her two older children. Very soon after the birth of this child she became psychiatrically ill. It was recognized enough that she was hospitalized in June. Anyone who is familiar with the nature of psychiatric care today recognizes that hospitalization today is reserved for a very few of the most ill. She was medicated after discharge but for some reason her first appointment for outpatient care, with a therapist, had not occurred until earlier this week. She speaks little English and it is not mentioned if her therapist was fluent in Spanish. The article on postpartum psychosis that I linked to earlier, by Margaret Spinelli, describes the manner in which women in that condition function; the presumption by the prosecutor that someone suffering from a psychosis is unable to plan actions or, in another cite, would be expected to curled in a fetal position, is plain ignorance. Such is not the nature of the illness.
There are still many gaps in the story and much information that we do not know but so far the story is most consistent with a woman who had postpartum psychosis and who, possibly because of language and cultural barriers, was not recognized as having psychosis rather than severe depression. Also for some reason she failed to receive adequate follow up services after psychiatric hospitalization discharge. (Discharged two months ago and apparently seeing a therapist only just this week, unclear if any monitoring was done of her medication or of her response to the medication.)
I feel for the father. He has been dealing with a wife lost to illness, coping with the unremitting stress of that and with managing his family for seven months. And working. Postpartum psychosis is more likely to go on to future bipolar disorder, so one can’t say that properly treated the wife he had known would be completely back as healthy as before, but certainly most go on to do fairly well even if chronically medicated. If the presumption of postpartum psychosis is correct then the baby’s death may have been completely avoidable with better outpatient services provided immediately after discharge. Maybe not. Again, psychosis can be hard to pick up on and to treat even without a language/cultural barrier and with good follow up. Now he’s lost his baby and his wife.
Sorry for the inappropriate serious treatment of the matter. Back to your laughing about how funny it would have been if the baby had landed next to a nurse on a smoking break.
