Well this has just been great. I knew exactly what the OP was talking about, but clicked in precisely to see if anyone had made the World Health Organization joke. Little did I know we’d get some Abbott and Costello, too.
At least Quadrophenia had some semblance of a coherent story, though the music sucked ass. Tommy couldn’t even manage that much, and was quite possibly the stupidest concept in the history of rock operas/concept albums (which is saying something).
Sorry for getting back on track. I’ll let you guys get back to your idiotic pun-fest.
Agreed! At least, as far as the movie. I love the music, always have. But the movie version of “The Acid Queen” really made me want to shake Ike Turner’s hand.
I watched this biodocu…thingy, having be a Who fan since high school lo, these many years ago. My wife, who has always said “I don’t really know a lot about them. What I know, I’m not crazy about” ended up saying, over and over, “They did that song!?” and “Wait–that’s not the Who!” and eventually, “Oh. I’ve been listening to them since I was a kid!”
(to be fair, she’s on some medications which mess with her memory, and she’s long been bad with names. So I forgive her)
I must say, I enjoyed the biodocu. I though I knew a lot about them, but as it turns out, I didn’t. Good stuff.
And to the fans who whine about not getting to hear whole songs? Fuck you. You’ve got the albums, you brag about having first printing of vinyl. So break out the old Victrola, put on “A Quick One” and shut the fuck up.
Really? I thought Quadrophenia’s story was pretty vaguely held together, and the story of Tommy is pretty coherent. I would send you my 14-page analysis of Tommy, but I lost it in a computer disaster, so I’ll just recommend that you read this, and it will all come together.
That’s one of the main gripes…which prompted a fan (not me!) to call Murray Lerner. Murray’s a nice guy–he took the call and said that Spitfire Pictures called the shots when it came to content. The fans were disappointed because there was so much promised in the early stages of the project. Reality reared its ugly head though…lack of time, money, and recalcitrant archivists (including Dave Clark!) made the dreams of an all-encompassing epic impossible.
As to the discussion regarding Quadrophenia, everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion. For some of us, that album came at a certain time in our lives–the music and story made a deep connection. Sort of a “you had to be there” kinda thing. You’ve heard the old cliche, “That album saved my life!” Believe me, there are many, many fans who feel that way about Quad.
Should I put Quadraphenia down?.." blondebear thought with alarm.
"If I do, these small Brits may come to great harm.
I can’t put it down. And I won’t! You bet!
A band’s a band. No matter how kvetched.
