I pit you guys...

As one of the few remaining Libertarians who wouldn’t cross the street to piss on a Conservative OR a Liberal if they were on fire, this board is way Left. Why deny it? Sure there are a few Righties but they are the minority.

If you want everyone to agree with you, this is really the wrong place for it.

Are you aware of anyone that has tried to deny it?

I gotta wonder if the current 21-page gay-marriage thread had any effect on the OP’s decision to walk away all huffed. In it, several opponents are asked to explain their reasoning and so far they have not in any way other than vague notions that gay marriage will hurt society, somehow.

Sure, there were a few personal shots here and there, but as far as I know, GWB wasn’t mentioned at all. I personally invoked Reagan by name once and by implication once, for what that’s worth.

gonzomax, in this thread. But he was quickly countered with the “but you’re a dumbass” argument. Who says there’s no debate on this board?

That pretty much describes me, too (although, I DO think George W. was probably the worst president in the last 100 years, for what it’s worth).

Looking at the rest of the world, and the SDMB has many members that are not American, I have to agree with glee. The reality is that many positions currently maintained by the Republicans and conservatives are being left behind and in the dustbin of history.

And the biggest issue to me, and for the SDMB’s mission to be against ignorance, is that several positions that conservative leaders and rank and file have like:

  • Being against Stem Cell research.
  • Supporting Creationism or Intelligent Design.
  • Against ending life with dignity (Terry Schiavo)

Show that many conservative Republicans are at odds with science and evidence itself.

Even science on the whole continues to be disparaged by many Republicans (like climate science), it is on this that I agree with the “joke” that “the truth has a liberal bias” but I think it is just a happenstance of modern history. I hope that in the future Republicans will dump many of the current ignorant ball and chains so the USA can continue progressing.

You could hang out with the MPSIMmers… They’re not that politically crazy.
Or the Mafia Players in the Game Room.
Or the Feuders in the Game Room.
Or the Mumpers.
Or the Cafe… uh… society people I guess, they need a better nickname.
But there’s more to these boards than just GD and Politics, don’tcha know?

In the words of Pat Paulsen, I’m not right wing or left wing. I’m middle-of-the-bird.

Are you dumb enough to think you people have the slightest impact on me? I just hope you guys are open enough to eventually learn. I sort of tell you the truth in small pieces. Your not able to understand all of what happened to us. i do believe some of you sense that our country has gone terribly wrong. You just do not really want to know why. it is too late and unfixable now. We are doomed if we continue on our present path.

This post must have been stuck in a timewarp, since it was clearly written during the Bush Presidency!

Things have changed now. The US has renounced searching for WMDs in Iraq, stopped torturing + imprisoning without trial and is turning the economy around.

I’d like to think this is true. I hope it is. But until we see actual economic growth, not just a slowing of contraction, and Obama quits asserting some of the same abuses of Executive Power that Bush was, I’m remaining skeptical.

This is kinda what I mean…at no point did I self-identify as a conservative, but the assumption is that I am. I’m more like **Bobotheoptimist **in that I think any one who picks any “side” is probably lacking in critical thinking skills.

I stayed out of the SSM thread after about the 2nd page, since I think that SSM is so acceptable, it’s not even worthy of debate. What gets me is not so much the debating (which I love) but the knee-jerk hate - see the anti-“tea bag” protest thread for an example. Fox News is not an army of jack-booted thugs, but a legitimate news source. GWB was kinda a lousy president, but he wasn’t the worst single thing to happen to America. Americans in fly-over country are not all Bible-thumping, overweight morons, they just have different opinions.

I guess what I see around here that is disheartening is the assumption that everyone who thinks differently about liberal viewpoints is not only incorrect, but stupid trash who needs to understand that every idea the Right has has failed, and that they better get outta the way, since the Left Train is gonna roll right over them. It’s not so much a specific thread I could point to, but an underlying attitude among the majority of posters. A good example would be the pitting of Sam Stone - who I consider one of the most intelligent and well-reasoned posters on this board.

It’s not so much the debate - it’s the hate, and I don’t see that coming from the more-right or centrist posters on this board.

Did this board even exist at any time between January 20, 1989 and January 20, 1993 (i.e., during the presidency of George H. W. Bush)?

This is probably where that assumption came from:

(bolding mine)

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Well … I’ve been reading message boards for a while. And that hate is out there; it’s there in posts from people of all political inclinations. I know what you mean, that sometimes it seems like this group is doing it more or that group is doing it more, but really it depends upon time and cirucumstance.

It’s just part of it. I don’t have to like it, but the reality is, it’s not going away.

Well, I did say I “wonder” if it had an effect. Gay marriage was a significant factor in the 2006 midterm elections; it’s not a huge stretch that it would still be a factor to conservative posters here and since you’re apparantly walking away because conservative posters aren’t getting a fair shake…

These are not difficult dots to connect.

Well, I figure at least 80% of the hate comes from, say, 10 particularly active users. Ignore them.

You make the very common mistake of mistaking a random salmagundi of individual voices as a united front. The politics that you ascribe to this imaginary construct “the board” is actually only the politics of a few of the loudest voices talking over one another. “The board” doesn’t exist, at least not in the context in which you use the term.

There are plenty of people here who feel as you do. To retreat because there are a few individuals who make it impossible for you to float comfortably on your unexamined convictions is, A) misconstruing the necessarily cacophonous nature of any discussion in such an open forum, and B), cowardly.

Well, I’m not going anywhere, don’t worry…

And the Conservatives (even Mrs T) are to the Left of the (American) Democratic Party.

They may not wear the boots, but please don’t us “legitimate” “news” and “Fox” in the same sentence. Give me a break :frowning:

But…they’re both Fair and Balanced. It’s right there in their slogan. What more do you want, hippy?
