Conservative Checking In...

This is in the Pit as a precaution.

Hello, my name’s TLD, and I’m a conservative…

“Hiii TLD…”
Now then. I believed in the War in Iraq. I still think it did some good. I still think there might have been reason to believe there were WMDs. I still believe Saddam needed to be removed.

I also now believe the whole thing has been a monumental clusterfuck.
Actually, I’ve believed that for the last twelve months, but that’s not what I’m worried about here. What I’m concerned about here is that Bush is about to do something unbelievable with sending in all those new troops.

Mr Bush, cut your losses and leave. Have your spin doctors call it a victory. Hey, you might even be able to point to some truths in doing so. But whatever you do, get out of Iraq NOW. Do it like a man.

The Dopers were right. You really are a dangerous idiot. I apologise to the SDMB for supporting this fool (still a conservative though).

Any other conservatives with me?

  • TLD, conservative.

Hunh, not much of a conservative, if you go changing your mind all willy-nilly like that. George would never do such a thing.

You may get some company, but some went back for 3 or 4 cups of the kool aid.

As was pointed out to me in recently on these boards, I’m a non-US conservative. I think that makes all the difference. I’d be a “Commie” in Mississippi.

You’re an Australian conservative. That makes you a flaming radical in the U.S. :stuck_out_tongue:

You say your a conservative but by Australian standards that would make you a Liberal wouldn’t it?

Join the club. I also supported the toppling of Saddam (in fact, I wish it had been done back in 1992) but I was never under the illusion the Americans were going to be out of Iraq anytime soon.

Well said, sir. Duly noted.

Will someone check and be sure that TLD is not on the Straight to the Wall Come the Revolution list? I very much doubt anything more is called for than a few weeks at the Jane Fonda Aerobic Re-education Camp.

Welcome to the Dark Side! Why do you hate America?

All kidding aside, though, it’s your American counterparts who will bring us to the tipping point that gets us out of this morass. So long as the opposition to the Iraq war could be painted as merely (unpatriotic military-hating weak-on-evil loony) liberals, those in power could shrug off all criticism. Now that significant segments of their base are deserting them, they’re desperately seeking a solution that stops the hemorrhaging while saving face. Not that this latest surge of insanity will do it, but Bush is showing that deer in the headlights look.

Why do you hate Australia, TLD?

Doesn’t have the same ring to it, does it?

Too many syllables. Try why do you hate Oz?

Old-school style Republican here (hey, hey, put the rotten fruit away please, hear me out, m’kay?..)

i’ve NEVER liked dubya, he’s an inarticulate, drooling moron, with the I.Q. of cottage cheese (i really shouldn’t say that, cottage cheese is actually decent stuff, high in protien, low fat, don’t want to badmouth cottage cheese…), and he is NOT an old-school Republican, he certainly DOES NOT speak to my interests

i’m a Mac repair tech, not a millitary tactician and even I knew that the War was going to be a collosal clusterfuck from day 1, i hate the fact that this man is “representing” the Republican party, thanks largely to him, people think Republicans are evil (well, ALL politicians are evil, really)

I’ve always voted Republican in every election but the last two, 6 years ago, i saw through Dubya’s facade, and lodged a vote for Nader in protest, in the last election, i actually held my nose and voted for Kerry, mainly to send a message that IMHO, Dubya needed to be FIRED

I’m not the only one in my family, both parents are hardline Pubbies, oldschool like me, both Mom and Dad are extremely upset with Bush, and hate him, if Georgie can alienate the hardline Pubbies, he’s gotta be doing something wrong

well, i’m kinda’ rambling now, so i’ll close with the message that I’m a conservative Pubbie and I HATE Bush, the idiot has done massive damage to the credibility and reputation of America, and it’ll take years to repair the damage

This Pubbie wants Bush FIRED! (may as well fire Cheney too, and hide his firearms…)

my daddy was somewhat to the right of the john birchers, believed in the death penalty for repeat offenders, and he hated Bush.

My brother-in-law, a flamingly right-wing bastid, hated him from Day One too.
Can’t imagine why.

It occurs to me that there must be a lot of you conservatives/Republicans out there (and here on the Dope) who either bought the Bush-as-conservative package and are now disillusioned and disgusted by how he’s betrayed their principles, or (like MacTech) saw through him from the get-go but whose voices have been drowned out by the slogan-screeching of the radical rightwingers who’ve hijacked their party.

Granted, it’s because we’re in the middle of a clusterfuck that will scar this country for a long time, but damn, it must feel good for you to be able to repudiate Bush and all (or most) of what he stands for and now find yourself in good rock-ribbed Republican company, rather than having to hang on the fringes of us liberal loonies.

By the way, my father was an old-school style Republican, and while he lived we disagreed on a number of issues, but he regarded the other side of the aisle as worthy people, not deluded demons. I’d love to see our political discourse return to that kind of mutual respect (on both sides).

Say the secret woids, and become one of the Usual Suspects®. Go forth, and sin no more.

Congratulations. Now we are all faced with the danger that GW is after a war with Iran. Carrier group to the Persian Gulf. I heard that Patriot missile units are going to Iraq where the locals don’t have ballistic missiles but Iran does. Raids on Iranian consulates in Iraq. I fear that GW has gone 'round the bend.

I’m a conservative.

I feel that we bear a huge responsibility for what we have done in Iraq. Simply said, we broke it. We have to fix it.

This is not about the community of nations, but our own moral necessity.

I have no sodding clue on what the right thing is. Because the right thing should have been done when the war started.

I have some hopes in the new generals. I hope it is not too late.

But if I had my way, we would not leave. If I felt suitable for the armed forces, I would volunteer. (I’ve got a number of minor and major physical problems, from asthma to two blown knees.)

But, well. Things are messed up, and they’re liable to stay that way. Sucks to be us. I just hope the next, Democratic president, will do something smart.

Well, to put my views on the current U.S. political system down in electrons…

in my view, the entire system is overdue for a, well, to put it in computer terminology…

the whole system needs an Open Firmware reset, Repartitioning, and a Wipe-And-Restore… assuming we’re not dealing with defective hardware…

yes, all the original data will be obliterated in this process, uhh, that’s kind of the point here, you don’t want to do an Archive and Install, as that will simply hide the old OS, and put a fresh OS in place, then copy over your personal data, very probably bringing the corruption back over with it, we need to start fresh from a known-good configuration here…

I’m middle of the road: liberal on some issues, conservative on others; it really depends on the issue. I must say that my experience – and this is just my own personal experience here – the liberals I know and have known are much more narrow-minded than the conservatives I know and have known. The liberals I’ve known generally go into fits if you don’t agree exactly with them, whereas the conservatives I’ve known have generally been open to listening to other points of view. Whenever I tell this to my liberal friends, they insist I’m full of shit and possibly the spawn of Satan, ironically reinforcing my view.

That said, I support the war in Iraq, but I understand why some people do not.
