They have something like it they call the Infobahn, where the speeds are way faster than what Americans are used to.
But it’s still safe because the Germans are far better trained than US Americans.
Why can’t he be both?
[sub]Now who’s being naive?[/sub]
He pleases the ladies by any means necessary.
People who irresponsibly imply that others are racists rarely feel any remorse for their actions. “Racism” is much too convenient a club to use on one’s opponents. I would not expect you to forgo it in the name of decency, or even out of respect to the millions of genuine victims of racism in this world, whose suffering is cheapened, demeaned and stripped of meaning every time the word is trotted out as a catch-all insult to verbally terrorize your opponents.
Although most of my ancestors are European, the one I am most proud of is a black woman who escaped north from slavery at enormous personal risk. Now THERE was a victim of racism! I like to think her love of freedom is something I inherited, and explains why I am aghast when our freedoms are threatened by an alliance of politically correct polyannas and religious fundamentalists who seek to murder authors and cartoonists who “insult Islam” and to tear down our separation of church and state.
I wonder if my ancestor would shake her head in confusion when her descendant is accused of “racism” for wanting to defend these freedoms.
For the record, I blew it on that one. Completely forgot about Marshall.
I suppose that completely negates the rest of my post too, huh?
I’m gonna remember this the next time you whine that everyone here is bigoted against mental illness.
Actually that would fit in this case – Valteron is a barking loon.
Maybe she’d say “I’m so proud that my great-great grandson is trying to use my bravery as cover for his own prejudices against other people.”
Or maybe not.
Was 50% a passing grade back in the day?
I just happened to have more to do while I was taking courses than come on here and engage in a battle of wits with a bunch of unarmed people. I just happened to have a bit of free time lately.
And then you needed three months to work up the appropriate level of outrage at being called a racist when you’re really a bigot.
Outrage, like fine whiskeys, takes a while to ferment properly.
Please don’t think I am not enjoying all these insults from “moron” to “barking loon”. But even in the Pit, some modicum of rational relationship between questions and answers should be maintained.
You will remember that I asked: “If someone can please show me where I have made actual racist comments, please do so. Otherwise shut your f***king mouths.”
Just to guide you along, I will help you with the following definition. What you must find is a comment by me that fits into the following definition:
Racism: /ˈreɪ.sɪ.zəm/ the belief that people’s qualities are influenced by their race and that the members of other races are not as good as the members of your own, or the resulting unfair treatment of members of other races (Cambridge Dictionary)
Of course, there is a corollary to this: If you claim my comments about Islam are racist, you would have to show me how Islam, which includes blond, blue-eyed Bosnians, blue-black Africans, western Chinese, Indonesians, Arabs and Pakistanis, could possibly be considered a race under any definition of that word. Especially given that Islam is a religion/ideology defined by belief which has NOTHING to do with DNA and genetics, or physical appearance.
Come on, now, people. I have posted on SD for YEARS! Surely you can find ONE comment of mine that would fit the definition of racism?
Am I the only one wondering what asshol;es are?
Plainly Valteron doesn’t mind being called a bigot because he knows he is one. Bigotry and racism are equivalent failings, and someone who was this upset about being called a racist wouldn’t ignore being called a bigot. And frankly, substiuting “racist” for “bigot” is a common error. It takes a Valteron to get this upset about it.
An asshole that is winking: ; )
Like regular assholes, but with a prolapsed semicolon…
Win.
I do not argue with the insult “bigot” because it is so relatative and subjective as to be meaningless.
This is what led Ambrose Bierce in “The Devil’s Dictionary” to define “bigot” as:
BIGOT, n.
One who is obstinately and zealously attached to an opinion that you do not entertain.
Interestingly, the words “racist” and “racism” do not occur in Bierce’s work. That is because Bierce had a fantastic built-in bullshit meter and used his book to lampoon terms like “bigot” for the meaningless twaddle they are. Whereas “racism” and “racist” are serious matters.
If you want a serious definition of “bigot” here it is from the Cambridge:
bigot noun /ˈbɪg.ət/ a person who has strong, unreasonable beliefs and who thinks that anyone who does not have the same beliefs is wrong
See how meaningless this term really is? Martin Luther King strongly (and in the opinion of millions of southern whites, unreasonably) believed segregation was wrong. If you had asked Dr. King whther people who opposed his integrationist stand were wrong, I am pretty certain he would have said “yes”. So, we are forced to the absurd conclusion that Martin Luther King was a bigot because of his strongly held views.
Only if we are required to take the opinion of millions of southern whites as gospel. Happily, we are not. If you are being “forced” to that conclusion, then you are speaking for yourself.
“Unreasonable” in that definition could equally be questioned as regards “unfair” in the definition of racism you provide upthread.
