I really really need some advice, QUICK

Well that’s great and your son will have fun also.

I heard a number of native Americans’ groups were joining to file a class action lawsuit to estop the use of the name “Indian Guides,” as well as that organization’s practices that demean and devalue the unique culture and contribution of indigenous Americans. Sorry, sonny can’t join them either!

Just wanted to pup in and thank Missy for the kind words!

Thank you for the kind words, Missy!

I would like to hereby congratulate Missy’s boss for being an upstanding human being who has actually thought about the unfortunate situation brought about by the Boy Scouts national organization (which has brought very unfair pressure upon the 99% of the local organizations who do wonderful work for their members and for their communities). He had the kindness to anticipate and address your concerns, and to give you a viable alternative (even if I do find the “Indian” part of Indian Guides a little silly, they are still a fine organization themselves).

Let’s hear it for all of the Scouts (except for the hardcore nitwits in the national office)!

Hi…I was a boy scout at one time, and I found that the groups pretty much do their own thing, and i’m sure that sexual orientation will not enter into it. One person boycoting Boy Scouts will do nothing unless the “big cheeses” in boy scouts know your opinion. Perhaps if they recevied many letters from people like you, saying that they don’t want their sons to join because of their discriminatory history, they might start making changes

It’s really great how this turned out - but if the subject ever comes up between you and your boss, I’d love to know how he would react if one of his own kids turns out to be gay, or an atheist.

Great…and kudos to your boss, too!

If you don’t like the scouts policy on gays, you won’t like the armed forces policies either!

Umm, Boy Scouts are not in any way anti-gay. The Boy Scout national org is, tho- to a certain extent. At a local level, i doubt if you would hear it mentioned, except as political talk. Some troops simply ignore the National office and go ahead and do their own thing.

I think there is still anti-gay bias in the Boy Scouts as there is in many things. Kids calling each other faggot or homo or saying something is queer. This all happened in my troupe. My scout leader was always into the macho crap of boys don’t cry, be a man… I thought the Boy Scouts were a hateful group. I didn’t have any fun or learn anything I felt was worthwhile until I was in the Explorers.

I think the stance she took is commendable and I think more people need to do what they think is right, rather than following the pack.

I think you are probably correct that it wouldn’t normally be an issue at the local level. With all the attention that the Supreme Court case brought, though, it will come up.

The real problem for people with strong anti-discrimination views is that by joining the organization we are tacitly giving our approval to its policies. Also, when dues are paid, they go to the organization at a national level. While the local troop may have control over what is taught to its own boys, they have no control over how those monies are used. We can’t decide to only support our local troop; it simply isn’t possible.
