I run into closed doors far too often.

Lately I have been running into closed doors alot, and I do not think it is my fault.

A lot of businesses have two glass front doors that close towards each other. When I enter. I use the right door…no problemo.

I do my business. Exchange my hard earned currency for goods or perhaps a service. Then I leave. Again, I use the right door, which is the one I did NOT use upon entering.

!!BAM!!

I try to look non-chalant. Hoping no one saw it. Maybe I have to pull. Silly me pushed a door that is supposed to be PULLED! So I pull. And no luck. This door is locked by those lever-type bolts that go into the floor and the top sill of the door.

Why? Why do you do this to me? Are we conserving hinges? Perhaps running short on door oil? Why do you have one door open and one door locked?

When I approach a door, I check the features to try to determine which way it swings. If the handles don’t make it obvious, I look at the hinges. Usually I can tell before I get there whether I need to push or pull. I have encountered doors where it was obvious I needed to push but not obvious which side; I push harder in the middle in that case.

In any event, when I push a door as I’m walking towards it I do so with an outstretched arm, elbow slightly bent. That way if it doesn’t go, my arm folds neatly and I stop myself before the rest of me reaches the door. At least I don’t draw attention to myself that way.

As for double doors with only one that works… don’t get me started.

There seems to be some type of “lock the left door as seen from the outside” ettiquette of which I am not aware…

It’s a security measure to protect us from the terrorists.

newcrasher, I wish it was that consistent. I thought it was, once. I was sadly wrong.
