I Saved A Couple Of Dogs!

Or, How I Spent My Valentine’s Day.

I didn’t spend ALL of it saving dogs. No. DogDad and I were on our way to an auction when we saw two dogs, a Black Lab and a brown SomethingOrOther running along the side of the road. They were being chased by their human. Now, anyone who’s ever tried to catch a Labrador Retriever knows this is what’s known in the Dog World as A Bad Idea. Mainly because Labs are the playfullest things known to man, and they consider “I’ll run and you can chase me” to be a GREAT game. Sure enough, they’d stop and look at their human JUST long enough for him to almost catch up, then they’d deke him and off they’d go again. Only they’re REALLY stupid about cars and would run across the street…and back again…and across again…
On a busy street. Yikes!
Fortunately, everyone in the immediate area was Aware Of The Situation and was driving REAL slow. VERY fortunately, because one of the dekes took the dogs RIGHT in the path of a full-size van. I honestly thought they were goners. Fortunately, the Mom In The Van was watching what was going on and had already stopped. Evidently being a parent gives you Extra-Special “I Bet This Isn’t Going To Work Out Well” Powers or something.
So anyway, right past the Van That Stopped was a driveway, so I turned in and opened the door of my car and made kissy noises at the dogs. Oooo, they thought this was just the greatest thing, so they ran up and tried to climb in the car, on the car, over me, ANYTHING as long as I’d pat them and play with them.
About this time, their human caught up with them / us and we piled dogs and human into the back seat of my vehicle and we drove them home. Turns out that Black Lab had done the sneakydog thing while the Dog’s Human was going into the house and took off like a shot.

Dogs were saved, human child was exhausted, and everyone went home happy.

DogDad and I completely forgot it was Valentine’s Day. We only remembered when we went out for dinner (we didn’t feel like having leftovers) and couldn’t figure out why the restaurants were so crowded.
Go figure.

But the dogs were saved, so that’s OK.

I congratulate you for your good deed. It is comforting to know there are dog-friendly people in the world.

Last year we picked up a stray collie that had been running around the neighborhood – well, not picked up exactly, we opened the gate and he came right in happy to see people – and we got in touch with a local rescue and kept him for a few days until a potential adopter came by. The dog took one look at the potential adopter and said, “Aha! It’s MY NEW PERSON!” and is now being spoiled rotten by the guy.

He was a wonderful dog, but we already have two, one of whom will simply not put up with a third dog. Otherwise we probably would have kept him. I had to restrain myself from going out and fussing over him much because I didn’t want to get attatched; this was a really nice dog, and it would have been all too easy to do so.

He was about a year old and unfixed. Surprise. Arrrgh. He’d gone out looking for a girlfriend, apparently. It’s all too common a story in rescue circles.

It feels REALLY good, doesn’t it?
