I saw a spy this morning.

One of the bus drivers in Chapel Hill is a former spy. He was never convicted, but there was a good bit of evidence that he really was a spy. It’s likely that Robert Hanssen tipped him off that he was being investigated. It’s a very juicy story, with shoplifting, S&M and high-priced call girls. I saw him this morning on my way in to work. Whenever I see him, I always wonder what he’s up to.

So, what kind of interesting people are in your town? Does anyone else have a spy in the neighborhood?

No spies, but we do have Johnny ‘Mad Dog’ Adair"

Strange that the bext article that popped up was in the Taipei Times, but their you go.

there I meant to type there! Cringeworthy error to make.

Not in my neighborhood, exactly, but I shoot on team with a couple of spies.

Scary stuff. I’d rather have a spy for a neighbor than a terrorist!

Our spy is very quiet. He’s been busted a couple of times for shoplifting, but other than that, I think he’s harmless. If it hadn’t been for the Hanssen case, not very many people around here would know about him.

I don’t know anything about international espionage that I didn’t see in a James Bond film, but your neighbourhood spy can’t defeat the security at Wal Mart?

 I hadn’t thought about that. He must be out of practice. And it was at Harris Teeter (a grocery store), which has even less security than Walmart.

Perhaps he “wants” to be caught!

Laughing on the bus, Playing games with the faces
You said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy
I said, 'Be careful! His bow-tie is really a camera…

My high school history teacher was an operative in the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) way back. He’d start telling a story, then pause and mutter, “Has this been declassified yet?”, then continue.

My mother worked at the CIA when it was still in an old skating rink in DC (Pre-Langley). She interviewed operatives and wrote up their reports (a secretary, really), her group’s specialty area including Afghanistan. When the Soviets invaded in 1979, she considered going back, having a good knowlege of all the tunnels and hiding spots the CIA helped build back in the 50’s.

Not enough excitement in his life now, I guess. The rumor is that he likes a little bit of bondage and S&M, so maybe he’s hoping the cops will rough him up.

 Now I need to find a way to slip that into a conversation.

You know, I think he does wear a bow tie.

I attended a midweek Bible study at an Episcopal church in McLean Virginia once. So I can say that I have discussed portions of the Book of Isaiah with a couple of Anglican CIA agents.

Magic Eyes, you may have shoplifting spies in Harris Teeter, but we had Eric Braeden (Victor Newman from “The Young and the Restless”) as a bagboy at Food Lion. (No idea who the man really is, but he could be Braeden’s identical twin brother.)

Not with (Ron?) Solomon?

Let me know next time you’re in town!

Hmmm…this sounds suspiciously like Felix Bloch. I’m very familiar with this case, as I was part of the team that went into the Vienna embassy to try to find out if it was compromised. The cited article says he moved to NC, and I had heard that he was driving a bus somewhere, so it fits.

I wouldn’t be surprised. I’m about 20 miles from the CIA’s headquarters.

I have never met a spy I didn’t like. I have rarely met an FSO I liked. That is how I tell them apart.

I once worked with an ex-KGB officer, we went through qualification training and testing at a company I worked at. He was an amazingly smart and detail oriented guy, and scored perfectly on all of the qual exams, highest in the class.

I have no doubt that he was seriously skilled at what he did, makes me glad that he’s just a civilian suburbanite now. I imagine him ruling his homeowner’s association meetings with an iron fist.

“So Mrs…” shuffles papers “…Jones. I’ve noticed some odd patterns in your lawn mowing recently. Odd, some might say. Odd…or would it be…TREASONOUS!!! Victor, hook up the batteries!”

I have a ghost living downstairs, does that count?
No?
Um, well… my dad works for the government… as a systems analyst…

Now, that is funny!

I’m the son of two long-since retired NSA analysts.
