I saw a strange eviction today

I’m was walking down Connecticut Avenue this afternoon, about three blocks from the White House, I saw this enormous pile of trash. I got closer, and I realized it wasn’t exactly trash…

I was a law library.

Hundreds and hundreds of books in trash bags. Particle board furniture, office equipment and files. It took up half a block of sidewalk. At the center of the mess, a single woman stared forlornly at people picking things up off of the street as if it were free for the taking. A group of people were pestering her, asking if they could haul stuff away, I think, to which she kept saying, “no, no, no.”

I watched one man half crouching like a buzzard, greedy eyes darting between the solitary beseiged guardian and a fax machine. Another person simply picked up a bag full of books as he passed by and kept going.

Legal eagles beseiged by vultures. Sure feels good to be back inside the Beltway.
