Earlier today, I was driving down a very busy street by a bank (OK, maybe it was a credit union ) and saw a woman with an ID badge out sweeping the sidewalk with a broom and one of those dustpans that has a long handle and a hinge.
What was unusual is that the woman was perfectly coiffed and wearing a business suit with heels, and looked like she might be the branch president.
Sometimes if it is really busy and they have nothing to do managers can take on tasks usually relegated to minions. Or maybe there was a mess they couldn’t wait on maintenance to clean worried it would look bad to customers.
There was a wreck on the street outside the Taekwondo school earlier this evening. No injuries, but a nice big traffic jam while they cleared it up. Nice for me because all those folks had to do to entertain themselves was look at the banner on the outside of the school.
I work at a city hospital in a not-great area of town. Some of our patients are…rough around the edges. Still, they’re our peeps and we love them.
Today I was at a fancy lunch do with some colleagues and we were trying to get a cab back. The first cab we tried to take turned us down and, while in the second cab, we were hypothesizing that some cabbies just don’t like going there and how wrong that is, etc.
We came to a pause in the conversation at a red light about a block from our destination. Suddenly this homeless man on the corner starts shouting,
Here I sit
Broken hearted
Tried to shit but only farted!!!
Not recently, but several years ago a work friend and I were on a break, walking around downtown and a car - I believe it was a VW Beetle- drove past us with a tiger sticking his head out the passenger’s side window. We looked at each other like" WTF" and ran down the street after it. When we got back to our desks everyone acted like they didn’t believe us and sure enough there was a picture of said tiger and his owner in the paper the next day. Turns out the circus was in town.
Same here. I rarely see anything unusual either. This week, though, I did discover that a family of groundhogs has excavated a pretty big burrow under my driveway. I didn’t know they were there until a neighbor told me. I looked, and that’s a helluva big hole! I rent, so I informed the landlord. They didn’t seem to care much. I would think that a hole the size of a 55-gallon drum under the driveway would raise the concern that the driveway might collapse. Oh well, not my house I guess.
A couple weeks ago I went to the grocery store and saw a guy wearing a white supremacist t-shirt. It had the Stars and Bars, with the Nazi SS symbol superimposed on it. I guess he wanted to remove all doubt. There was a slogan under the image, “Support your local remaining few”. I Googled that, and it took me to a couple sites I don’t need to visit again anytime soon.
I saw three people dressed in bear costumes running down the street at a fairly good clip. I imagine it was some kind of advertising thing, but it certainly made me do a double take.
On a related note, I saw a guy walk in to a bar who was so drunk, everyone assumed he had cerebral palsy or a similar neuromuscular disorder. The bartender did not want to be rude, but she didn’t know what to do. You can’t just ask, “so, why are you walking like that?”
So she served him. He knocked over his drink and started yelling at the bartender to get him another. So she called the cops. The first cop came and peered around a corner. He recognized the guy from many previous meetings. He called for backup and eventually three cops talked to the guy and convinced him to come along peacefully.
I think the “million wasps” part figured strongly into their decision. Sadly, containment didn’t.
A couple weeks ago, as I was taking the onramp to the freeway on my way home from work, a coyote ran across the ramp in front of me and scuttled off into the underbrush.
A big cougar walked through our lake resort trailer park (hope that describes it). It meandered around a little and looked in some windows and them walked off.
Two weird things happened to me while driving recently. About a month ago I was driving to a friend’s house and I saw in my rear view mirror a white Mustang, about to pass me on the right. Then I saw in my other rear view mirror a blue Mustang on my left. They passed me at precisely the same instant.
About a week ago I was driving to work and Iron Maiden’s “Flight of Icarus” came on the radio. Moments later a Camero pulled in front of me with the vanity plate “ICAROS”.
We had a fantastic sunset yesterday wherein we were treated to a rare, for our area at least, sun column (or light pillar, if you prefer.) I sent this picture to our local television station and am hoping they’ll show it on the noon news when they have their viewer pics segment. I’ve seen sun columns before but they were all very faint compared to this one.
