I Saw "Hairspray" Last Night!

My husband rocks. Several weeks ago he called me to say that “Hairspray” was coming to the Bass Hall, and he was going to send me and my sister. And he bought us front-row tickets!!

We were able to see down into the orchestra pit, so before the play started we were watching the musicians get set up. And having learned a lot more about guitar playing from my guitarist husband, I was trying to see the different guitars and amps that they were using.

And we were able to see the expressions on the actors’ faces! Usually when we’ve gone to see the Broadway touring shows, we’ve been so far back that we had to have opera glasses to even see what the actors were doing. This was a very delightful change.

I have a very loud laugh. It’s embarrassing when I’m in a situation where I have to be quiet, but actors love me. So the guy playing Edna Turnblad was playing to me and my sister. That sounds like I’m delusional, but I’m really not. He looked at us quite often, winked a few times, and when he was blowing kisses at the end of the show, we got the first one. He was just freakin’ hilarious! When he and his husband were doing the song and dance about “You’re Timeless to Me,” he made his husband laugh so hard that he totally broke character. The guy had to take off his glasses and wipe his eyes, he was laughing so hysterically. It was just awesome!!!

So if you were there last night, my sister and I were on the left side in the front row, and I was the one with the very loud laugh who was probably one of the first to start dancing when Tracy told everyone to do so.

And if you get a chance to see “Hairspray,” do it. It’s just fun!!

Terrifically fun show. A friend and I saw it on Broadway with Marisa Winokur and Harvey Fierstein a couple years back, not too long before they left the cast. Fifth row right, about 20 feet from the stage.

Took my wife to it for our first anniversary back in January. I enjoyed it, even though I didn’t like the movie. She loved it, went crazy about it. Did you have Jm J Bullock as the husband? I didn’t even know he was still alive…

Hairspray has currently landed here in Las Vegas at the Luxor Hotel/Casino for an open-end run. Currently starring Harvey (although he leaves at the end of next month and is being replaced) I saw it in previews. Thought it was a fun show and agree that it is worth seeing.

They did cut the show a bit here. It runs 90 minutes without intermission. Harvey was quoted as saying he thinks the shorter version is actually better and the pacing improved it.

Oh, and here is a fun link to the show in Las Vegas.

I saw it when it came to Miami. I LOVED IT and I want to see it again.
