astro, are you sure it’s the first time you saw her? She has an extensive acting resume which includes the mega-hit “Bio-Dome” and as the Green Fairy in “Moulin Rouge”. (I think the advantage of casting her as the latter was that no camera tricks were required to make her appear fairy size.)

Many of those who have never seen Kylie Minogue in performance are shocked by her stature. She is incredibly fit and slender with such proportionately long and slender legs that she looks like she’s got the same build as Gina Davis. She is also usually photographed against solid colour backgrounds – like a solid white wall – that provide no sense of scale. Many people assume she is quite tall. I was one of them.
When I saw her on an awards show next to other performers, I was shocked. Until then I thought she was near 6’. So yes, I can honeslty say I too was rattled. I’m 5’2". I expected Kylie to be towering over me. A co-worker used the term “freakishly small” – he thinks she is the hottest performer out there, but was also surprised by her height. (Still thinks she’s hot.) I certainly wasn’t offended though, by his definition I’d be “freakishly small” too.
*Astro is also not the first to be creeped out by overdone make-up or plastic surgery. Kylie has big, blue eyes and a lot of camera work used in her videos uses wide angle lenses that make her eyes practically look like the are bugging out. It’s disconcerting. Stylistically, her videos and performances are overlit, with pale, even make-up, I have to agree that she sometimes looks like an android with elastic-like skin.
I work with musicians in their 30s and 40s. Most of them are gorgeous and some would put 20 year-olds to shame. On the other hand, I’ve also worked with an actress who has had a face-lift. Her face looked stretched and “too smooth.” It was very unappealing. Did Kylie have plastic surgery? No idea. But when over-lit I find her a little creepy too because she looks “too perfect” like a mannequin. It’s that Michael Jackson texture look.
(Note: When she was still living in Oz, she had a nice tan and looked far sexier. The paler make-up does NOT do her justice.)
I also agree with Astro regarding the choreagraphy and design. It harkens back to some 80s music that I’d rather forget about.
Kylie has been plugging away in the music industry for a very long time. I think it’s marvelous that she has finally managed to get her dues. She definitely deserves it. I just wish it wasn’t so much like Devo.
