What a superb movie on every level!
Yeah, it’s pretty good.*

I agree. I have the soundtrack, too.
‘Bona fide.’
I absolutely love that movie. It’s one that gets better every time I see it.
Last time I saw it, I busted up at “Of course it’s Pete, look at him!” Now it’s one of my favorite movie lines. It caught me off guard and reminded me how damn funny the whole thing was.
The music is amazing, too, but I’m a bit biased–I was born in West Virginia and grew up listening to bluegrass (whether I liked it or not, which was decidedly “not” at the time). Now it reminds me of sitting in front of the fire at PaPa’s house, and I have gained a new appreciation for it.
Great movie, great music.
I watched it once and thought it was pretty good. Then, I read that it followed Homer’s The Odyssey and watched it again, this time with my mom. I had a good time finding the “tie-ins” and pointing them out to her.
“Do not seek the treasure.”
This is in my top 5 movies, ever. Love it. The perfect soundtrack takes what would already be a great movie and dropkicks it to a whole 'nother level. I’m almost jealous of you for getting to see it for the first time.
Added bonus: If I play the soundtrack my toddler starts shaking his little ass all over the place, which is rather endearing.
What am I missing? I’ve tried to watch it and it just fails to keep my interest.
It’s beautifully shot, well-acted, the soundtrack is great, and it’s a nice retelling of a classic story.
I’m sorry you didn’t get a chance to see it in the theater. It was one of the first films to be completely digitally processed (to turn all the green vegetation to brown), and at the time it was amazing to see. Brilliant writing and performances and truly amazing music- quite possibly my all-time favorite Coen Brothers film.
I don’t expect everyone to laugh at it. Hell, my wife and I were laughing our heads off at things that nobody else in the theater was laughing at. The overhead shot of the car pulling up to a lonely crossroads and Delmar saying: “Why don’t we pull over and give that Colored boy a ride?” - who of course turns out to be Tommy Johnson who has just sold his soul to the Devil.
It really is a perfect film.
One of my favorite movies.
“She r-u-n-n o-f-t”
Watch Preston Sturges’ wonderful Sullivan’s Travels (the movie that inspired the Coens to name the film what they did) and you can play the same game with the references.
Fantastic films (both of 'em).
“It’s a good thing your mother died givin’ birth to you; if she’d have seen you she’d have died of shame.”
It’s a beautiful film and about as sweet as a film featuring the devil, the depression and the Klan can be.
Or combining the Klan and Busby Berkley. Genius.
In the DVD player now. Buying Pomade in the general store…
“I’m a Dapper Dan man!”
Damn! We’re in a tight spot!
“My Hair!”
Now was that just the one Woolworths or the whole chain?
This is the second best line in the whole movie. The first is
Well, ain’t this place a geographical oddity. Two weeks from everywhere!
Srsly, great movie.
I really love that movie too! It’s one of my favourites!
I also have the DVD “Down From the Mountain” which is really great in itself.
