I see the bad June a-risin' (Monthly Mini-Rants)

It needed to be said!

I’ll check with my neighbor when he asks me why I made a scene in his restaurant. :grimacing:

I hope it did some good!

(checking to see if one of Jackmannii’s Restaurant Laws was observed): Did she also monopolize the conversation at that table?

I once took a moment to hush a loud girls moment, transatlantic flight Chicago to Paris, sleeping / silence time until an outbreak in loud voices of young women chatting up a Skype call very early in our morning.

I loudly remarked

S’il vous plait?!

HUSH!

They did. :innocent:

Check.

I just had my power restored after a three-day outage. Because of where I live, that also meant no running water.

So it’s been kind of a rough week. Yesterday was my day off, but I went in to work anyway because I needed a place to brush my teeth and wash my face and get my dog (a senior with heart problems) out of the heat.

The stressful part, on top of just the inconvenience, the heat, worrying about my animals, and losing everything in my fridge and freezer, is that it could just come back on at any time. So like… at what point in the day do you decide to plan for no power overnight? I did finally spring for an airbnb last night because I could no longer pretend to be a civilized person in public without a shower. Best shower I ever had.

The power was finally turned back on this morning. Apparently, a computer error had kept it from being put in the queue to be assigned to a technician. idk. We did call the power company multiple times and I feel like maybe they could have caught that a little earlier, but whatever.

Anyway, all is basically okay now. I was supposed to see a show tonight (Welcome to Night Vale) and it got canceled (yesterday :frowning: ) due to Covid, which really sucks, but I’m too tired to want to go out like that tonight anyway. When I bought the tickets, it was through the venue website, but I guess it was through like… a ticket reselling platform? I don’t think that was clear to me from the beginning. But it means that the venue refunded everyone’s tickets, but instead of just getting a cash refund, I get “store credit.” Cool, I guess, for when/if it gets rescheduled, but right now, I’d rather have that cash.

I’ve started getting text messages asking to buy my home. With my name and address. How the hell do these people put all that together? Damn I hate this. I really want to reply “tell me your name and address so I can come over and tell you how I really feel about your intrusiveness.”

Ten-ish years ago we had a guy show up early on a weekend morning. He had donuts and a carafe of coffee with him. He knew about our property (which was impressive, as we cannot be seen from any road). He just wanted to meet us and let us know if we ever decided to sell he would buy.

It turned out we had some things in common. We shared the coffee and donuts, toured the property a bit and chatted. We let him know that we had no plans to move, but also discussed the fact that we were much older than him and so maybe we would be selling in the future.

You’re much more social, and accepting of salespeople, than I am.

Me: “Take a hike. Leave the donuts.”

I’ve had two calls come to me at work. They also knew my name and address.

There may have been calls to our land line. We only use it as a telemarketer trap. I think the message machine is full.

Heh. Salespeople I call the cops on (our road is private and marked clearly “NO TRESPASSING”). This wasn’t a salesman, he was just a guy who liked our property and the way it is hidden away.

It seems to me sometimes that the feeling you get when you know you don’t have to respond to everything on the internet, even if it was something you know about or even was said by you, but still wanting to on a primal level, is uniquely frustrating.

My mother is one of the like go-to people my grandfather (her father) calls whenever he has a problem. He currently lives in a nursing home and it starting to lose his mental faculties. He is also just really bad at small electronics, even though he relies heavily on his phone. He has started taking calls from basically anyone who calls him, including those with ill-intent. Now, Grandpa does not have access to his bank accounts so they aren’t able to do too much harm, but it is not fun all the same. The other day, a scammer claiming to be from Amazon called him to tell him he needed to pay shipping fees to have his package delivered and Grandpa called my mother SIX times that day to tell her about it. No amount of explanations from my mom about how it was a scam and that she has the Amazon account and that they’d call her, not him, seemed to sink in for him.

So I pit people that take advantage of old people. You are the actual worst and I hope you have a hard time sleeping at night when you think about what a scumbag you are.

Last month I went to the ER because my heart was acting up again (heart rate of 150 and A-fib). They did some tests and medicated me via IV and after five hours decided I was safe to go home, but I should follow up with a cardiologist ASAP. So I called and made an appointment for last Thursday. A few days they called to let me know that the doctor I was scheduled to see wasn’t going to be available on that day, but they could schedule me for a different doctor at the same time. Fine, I told them. Then, the morning of the appointment they called to tell me they had to cancel the appointment, and rescheduled me for this Thursday.

So this morning they called to tell me that the doctor wasn’t available this Thursday, and could I come in next Thursday?

So it’s urgent that I see a cardiologist ASAP, but they can’t seem to get me an appointment with one who is actually going to be there. Plus, every time they change appointments, I have to call the local EZ-Rider service to cancel the ride I had previously scheduled, and arrange for a ride at the new time. I suppose it’s a good thing I’m retired and don’t also have to arrange for time off from my job. And hopefully all these delays aren’t affecting my heart condition.

I was thinking the same thing. For crying out loud, if something happened to you, you could probably sue the appointment scheduler for malpractice.

After my first heart incident in early April, on the advice of the cardiologist I saw immediately afterwards, I purchased a KardiaMobile which I use to check my heart rate and EKG every day, as well as whenever my heart rate feels off. That’s how I knew to call 911 the last time.

Check to see if the phone itself, or the carrier, will block all calls except the ones in your grandfather’s contact list, then make sure you weed everyone but friends and family out of that. I’m pretty sure that’s a setting on my cell phone, although I haven’t turned it on.

On my iPhone I can silence unknown callers in settings. I’m assuming known callers are in my contact list.

Yes they are. That’s how that feature works.
