I Shall Now Complain About Local TV Sports Coverage

Here on my local cable lineup, in Springfield, Illinois, I have nearly 60 channels. No fewer than four of them have rights to broadcast Chicago Cubs games.

Last night the Cubs played the Mets.

WGN was showing its regular Thursday night lineup (a dumb movie).

Fox Sports Midwest was showing NASCAR updates, blooper reels, and other assorted “filler” programming.

Fox Sports Chicago was showing the White Sox .

ESPN showed Sumo wrestling ( ) and billiards.

So on the one night this year where nobody is broadcasting the Cubs game on TV, what do the Cubs do? They score 14 runs (a handful more than they’ve scored in their past three games combined) and win the game, thus protecting their four-game first-place lead over the Astros. And I didn’t get to see one single pitch, one swing of the bat.

I’m speechless.

Whoa…there are baseball games outside of Montreal that don’t get televised? And I thought Chicago was a real baseball city! Disgusting.

It was great! The Sox got spanked by the Twins to the tune of 12-2 … but I’m still boycotting baseball, so I didn’t enjoy it at all. And Koskie almost hit for the cycle, but the … no, no, I didn’t enjoy it at all.

The Sumo was cool, it was Yokozuna vs. Yokozuna when Musashimaru forced an additional, deciding, match by defeating Takanohana to tie the score on the 15th and final day of the Basho. Takanohana defeated Musashimaru in that final match for his 21st Emperor’s Cup!

Sumo is fun!

I agree, though, that SOMEONE should have broadcast the game. Didja at least get to listen on the radio?

Yup, WFMB 1450 AM. God bless Ron Santo and Pat Hughes!
