The TV Guide says it will be on ESPN 2. ESPN.com says it will be on ESPN 2. I turned on ESPN 2 and it isn’t there. Instead I’m seeing ESPN News. Now the Pirates are playing the Brewers. TV Guide made no mention of Pirates vs. Brewers.
I called the local cable affiliate to find out what’s going on. They claim they’re trying, but they usually have trouble with the Royals. See, the Royals game is blacked out. Apparently there aren’t enough people at the game so it’s blacked out. The problem is I can’t do anything about it because I’m nowhere near Detroit! I called MLB’s offices. Pretty much got the runaround. It doesn’t matter that there’s no possible way for me to go to Detroit, since I’m in KC’s regional area (and if that’s the case, why am I stuck seeing the Cardinals on the regional Fox network?), if the game is blacked out, it’s blacked out. MLB can’t bring in an outside feed. Great thinking.
I’m glad to see that when MLB isn’t busy looking the other way on steroids for the past 20 years, they at least had the good sense to put together a well thought out television package. I mean, if I were to actually see the Royals game on Opening Day, the first freaking game of the season, then I just might want to go see Royals games when they’re at home.
Lucky for MLB I’m a Cubs fan first. (I’ve got a thing for pain.) I have to feed my addiction somehow, but I’ve got my eye on you, MLB. I’m not the best when it comes to sticking to a boycott, so I won’t make empty threats, but one of these days you’ll do something to really piss me off, and that will be it.
Are you absolutely sure they’re not on free TV? Usually when a game is blacked out in the local markets, it’s because the local station is carrying it. If it’s not on Fox, I’d double check the over the air channels.
Sorry, didn’t completely read the OP. Carry on. (Sorry to hear you missing the game. Lima’s looking terrible, the Tigers look good - Bonderman especially. Teahen almost blooped one in for his first MLB at-bat, but just missed fair territory - he flew out on the next pitch. Da Meat Hook could be back to 2003 form. DeJesus packed on some muscle. They’re batting Berroa 6th for some reason.)
I’d just like to point out that my Brewers (fan by accident of birth geography) are currently tied for firt in their division!!
Wooohoooo. Mathematical elimination fever…catch it!
I opened this thread thinking it was a slam against Selig for trying to make the new steroid policy look tough, by nailing small fry like Alex Sanchez instead of going after its stars like Barry Bonds.
Curious - what makes you think it’s not going after it’s stars? The drug testing is administered randomly (though everyone gets to pee in a cup at least once during the course of a season). The fact that Sanchez was detected is a good thing - it shows that it’s not just the power-hitters that are users - steroids is being used to affect every aspect of the game.
Even still, there may be reasons to not target Bonds/Giambi/Sheff, just like the congressional hearings didn’t - it’s better to let the BALCO investigation run it’s course so as to not spoil admissible evidence into possibly not being admissible (at least, that’s what I heard last night).
Which is why we should see more players getting caught than we have been, including some of the big boppers.
Re the BALCO case, MLB is not an officer of the court, its steroid rules apply only to itself, and it’s irrelevant to the case what they find. Bonds et al. always have the right to shut up no matter what.
Probably not. It’s mostly likely that most of the players that were juicing stopped last year when it became obvious that a testing agreement was in the works.
Yeah, prolly so - you’re thinking of Bonds’ new proclaimed commitment to sleekness, and Giambi’s “intestinal parasite”, right? Apparently the conventional wisdom among players is “It isn’t a drug test, it’s an IQ test.”
Not that it makes much difference - I shit bigger than a 10-day suspension.
So, what’s this you say? The Tigers are winning? On opening day? This is a good omen. As I drive southeastward into work tomorrow morning, I won’t have to fear being blinded by the sun, for it shall be rising behind me.
Had to watch the Sox-Yankees game on YES last night. It was supposed to be on ESPN2, but same situation as the OP. I live in “Yankee broadcasting area” or whatever the hell it is.
It’s bad enough I had to see the Sox lose big, but I had to do it with Michael Kay describing it.
On the plus side, they did do a nice bit on Bob Sheppard, the Yankees public address announcer, one of the classiest and most recognizable voices in the game, and showed Ronan Tynan sing “God Bless America” at the stretch. ESPN2 probably wouldn’t have had that.
YeeeeeeHawwww! True Blue Brew Crew, baby! First place!* New owner that isn’t a Selig! :Snoopy dance: Look out MLB!
*Yeah, I know we were in first place last year after opening weekend (sweep of St Louis strut) before going on to suck donkey balls, which is why any 1[sup]st[/sup] place standing is reason to celebrate.
Hey, now’s a pretty decent time to be a Brewers fan - unlike the last 20 years. They’ve got a nice young core coming up who can absolutely mash. Barring injuries, they should be serious contenders in two or three years.
No kidding. But it’s always been that way. For more than a decade it was said that the Brewer’s always had one of the most solid farm systems in the league. Then along comes Bud or his idiotic daughter Wendy to sell off the most promising players after a few years in the Majors.
I reallyreallyreally hope the new owner has a little more vision. And the desire to keep them in Brewtown.
