I did that to my mouth once. It was the same sort of thing; an intense spasm right before sleep. I had braces at the time—yeowch! Hope your nose isn’t sore today.
I would like to know what to call this phenomenon(sp?), too.
This potentially dangerous phenomonon is known as NAPS (Nocturnal Annoyance: Power Spasm). So far, there is no known cure for NAPS, but it is preventable by having a spotter in bed with you.
Ouch! My husband is prone to falling asleep on his arm, cutting off the circulation, then turning over and smacking himself in the face with his deadened limb.
Similar experience-- I have long hair, and once in a while, while brushing it, I’ll hit a snag, my arm will bounce back, and I will club myself in the side of the head.
I think sleep-time is the only time I’m not clumsy. Although I did once get out of bed, not realizing that my legs were dead asleep (I guess I was too groggy), attempted to stand up, and just crumpled to the floor.
What you experienced is called a “Monoclonic (sp?) Jerk”. It’s basically a brainfart, except that it’s your body doing it. Rather routine for most people.
i once gave myself a black eye while asleep. my bed was up against two walls, and from the evidence i figured i had moved my arm, my elbow hit the wall and bounced off and my hand hit my eye. good sized bruise on my elbow, and a slight bruise on two knuckles. i don’t remember what i was dreaming about.
I hit myself in the face with a pool cue once. I was just learning how to shoot pool and thrust my arm forward too fast, something slipped, and the damn cue came up and whopped me right on the nose. Embarrassing.
