While we breathlessly await the reappearance of the OP, let me offer a semi-related story to pass the time:
A long time ago I had an opportunity to go on a buying spree in Indonesia and have someone else pay to have the stuff shipped to our house in Hawaii. Among the items I purchased was a meditating Buddha statue, carved from volcanic stone, that weighed over 400 pounds. It was quite a struggle to get it set up in our yard, but a couple of very strong movers managed to set it in place, and eventually our neighbor created an enchanting, peaceful garden around the Buddha.
Years passed. Tenants in the house came and went. In 2014 we went to inspect the property and were dismayed to see that the current tenants were not inhabiting the space as tastefully as we might hope. The garden was gone, and had been replaced with a dozen large trash receptacles, contents unknown. The carport was overflowing with motorcycle parts. Inside the house, jumbo-size boxes of disposable diapers were strewn everywhere.
Still - the tenants paid the rent and didn’t seem to be damaging the structure at all, so … none of our business, really, if their lifestyle required eyebrow-raising quantities of Harley Davidson gear, garbage pails, and Pampers.
But then I notice something horrible: *the Buddha statue was gone. *
This was simultaneously tragic (it was irreplaceable; after all, how often do you get a chance to import a 400-pound statue from Bali?) and tremendously puzzling. Given that the statue was too heavy to move an inch without professional help, how in hell had they gotten rid of it?
I asked the tenant where the Buddha was. He seemed a bit peeved at the question and denied ever having seen it, though we’re quite certain it was there when he and his family moved in. “Anyways,” he added loftily. “I wouldn’t know what Buddha looks like; I’m a Christian.”
Sadly, this guy is a teacher in the Hawaii public school system, which it may not surprise you to hear ranks very poorly.
(We did get the Buddha back eventually.)
The interlude is over. Back to you, davidm!
Now I want to know how you got your Buddha back.
Next month’s feminonsensical book discussion: How Cairo Got Her Buddha Back.
– pick up your copy (hardcover only, sorry) at Siddhartha’s Used Books ‘n’ Vegan Scones on Samsara Street.
I won’t keep you in suspense then - but the end of the story is pretty boring.
We eventually found the Buddha statue stashed behind the garage. While we don’t know how it got there, our leading theory is that Helco (the local utility company) came out to trim some trees/bamboo that they were afraid would interfere with the power lines. Possibly they wanted to put a truck or other equipment where the Buddha was, so they moved it out of the way without saying anything to anyone.
And…
They let me go today. He mumbled something about resources.
Not surprising really. Cash flow definitely seemed to be a problem.
Well, that’s pretty anti-climactic!
Uh, not that I was hoping for something bad to happen to you, davidm. Not at all.
Losing a paycheck is bad.
Eligible for Unemployment Compensation?
That’s a bitch. At least you didn’t buy the computer stuff on your card. I wonder how that would have played out.
Sorry to hear that. At least you got a week out of it.
That’s a bummer. Sorry to hear it. Sending good thoughts your way for a quick and successful search.
Not after two weeks’ work.
In Pennsylvania, it’s tricky. Even with only two weeks employment, they look at your employment history in the “base year”.
Yeah, everyone who had “we’re disorganized and are running out of money” wins the pot. I honestly think “Let’s pray together” fits in with that, when you’re having trouble making payroll you try to find other ways to keep up morale.
Sorry about the job loss.
But why would a company who is running out of money and having trouble making payroll go through the trouble of hiring more people?
Could be anything from if they land the contract that’s in the sales pipeline they’ll not only be solvent to be needing more bodies for all of the additional work to trying to keep up appearances so that existing employees don’t jump ship, which will definitely send them under.
I’m relieved for you. I think you dodged a bullet there.
Not a big one. Just a .22 “potentially awkward and/or religious” bullet, but ordinance just the same.
