I think Biden should resign

Hand off the final few months to Harris. Make her #47 and the first woman president.

Say he’s having some health problems and isn’t able to serve the American people at 100% anymore, and that this is the right time to end his 50+ year life of public service. He’s been a great president who’s done historic things (even if the American people can’t see it yet); finish off this amazing career by doing one more historic thing

Plus, then Harris won’t have to preside over the Senate when the rapist is certified.

Just a thought as I wrap up my political engagement here and off-board for a while.

Yup, I had the same thought yesterday. Troll Trump a bit by forcing him to shed the 47 label and cede it to Harris. He can be 48.

And let Kamala make her history anyway by becoming the nation’s first woman president. And let her have her 74 days as president.

doesn’t that scenario have to go through Congress first?

No. He can resign without action from Congress. Harris would never get a VP approved though.

Nope, not at all.

For her to nominate someone to serve as VP for the few weeks would require Congress getting involved.

No. At the end of the day, senility in the evening or not, on average Biden is a smarter person than Harris and more effective at getting things done. (That’s not a denigration of her - I’m sure that she’s a smart and at least relatively capable person, he’s just another level up and I’m not worried that, that’s going to totally fizzle away in the next 3 months).

There’s a small window of time to try and disaster proof some stuff. Biden is a better person and better positioned to do that.

It’s a creative idea, but it makes the first woman president into the ultimate lame duck.

To the extent the government can be made “disaster proof” from an ‘inside insurrection’ enabled by Congress and protected by a favorable judiciary, this is true. But the reality is that anything that Biden can do in the next two and a half months can be undone by Trump and a Republican Congress in a few days. However, Biden resigning just to make Kamala Harris a lame duck president is almost literally a plotline out of VEEP, and if it doesn’t have Anna Chlumsky going into a full meltdown it really isn’t worth it.

At this point, who gives a shit? Trump and the Republicans have thrown decorum and tradition out the window. We’re at the point where they do untraditional things and a good chunk of the public eats it up, no matter how cartoonish or outlandish or seems.

I don’t want Dems to lower themselves to Trump’s level of outrageous behavior, but this would be a simple way to sort of disrupt the order right now, while trolling Trump a bit, cheering up the disheartened base and making history.

There are many things in that class. There are also things that aren’t, and I expect that Biden has some sense for at least a few of them.

BUT. If Biden resigns, and Harris is president, and then is assassinated by overly-encouraged MAGA supporters, then that’s Mike Johnson in for the transition, and Project 2025 can start early.

How about if we have Biden go into full-on Old Man Rants at Cloud? “You stupid goddamned people don’t deserve another goddamned day of what little life I have left! Enjoy wallowing in your own crapulence, fuckwits!”

I don’t know, that would just be tragic. America for the second time in a row chose to go with the rapist over a woman; now giving her a little crappy sloppy seconds of a presidency as a hand-me-down from the oldest whitest man imaginable would seem to me rather to add insult to injury.

This was actually speculated on X. The paranoia says that then she will refuse to resign and declare martial law.
They can’t even be comfortable in their victory.

Because in addition to being unworkable it is ultimately pointless and pretty dumb. It doesn’t really disrupt anything, and “trolling Trump a bit” will just equivalence that the Democrats are capable of just as much fuckery as the GOP in the eyes of the voting public (for what that is even worth at this point).

There is essentially nothing that one president can do that another cannot almost as easily undo, especially with the aid of a willing Congress. At best, Biden can try to push out a big aid package to Ukraine, try to put some temporary brakes on Netanyahu, and issue some pre-emptive pardons.

I like the cut of your jib but we both know that Biden would stumble over it and end up mumbling some platitude. Maybe invite Robosaurus as his date to the inauguration?

On January 20, the presidency changes; no need for the incumbent to “resign”.

I think it’s a poor idea. I do like the idea of him boycotting the inauguration, or at least forgoing the traditional meet and greet at the White House. After all the discourteous things DT has said about him, he’d be well within his rights to do so.

Okay so I order the military to take the full body of the national oil reserves, spread it across an optimal slice of farmland in the middle of California, to destroy the bread basket of the nation.

Flick of a switch to undo: Yes or no?

Fait accompli is one example. There are more activities that are outside of the realm of fait accompli. You’re thinking about theory, not real world. In the real world, there’s a lot that you can do. It’s not limitless nor all-powerful, but there are useful things that you can do that aren’t trivial discover nor to rollback.

Biden suddenly resigning would invite considerable backlash and be interpreted as a gimmick, with the risk of making things even worse that they are.
