I just returned from getting a crown. So, I was in the chair for a really long time (this was the temporary one, where they’ve got to make all the molds & stuff, so it took a while).
My dentist has an excellent chairside manner. I like him a lot. Besides that, dental work really doesn’t bother me. So I’m sitting there, and he’s talking about the weather. He mentioned that the place he had just been to had decent weather–78 degrees and pretty dry. I asked him where he’d been, and he said “Guatemala. My wife and I are going to adopt a baby from there.”
Then he got kind of a funny look on his face, just for a second, like maybe he’d given me TMI or something. Now, it’s no secret here on the boards that I myself am a birthmother. So, I took that moment to share that information with my dentist as well. And I smiled when I said it, which let him know that adoption is a subject that I am most comfortable discussing.
He was just getting ready to poke my teeth with some iron hook things, and when I said “You’re going to adopt? Oh, that’s great! Hey, I’m a birthmother,” he stopped. He put his tools on his lap and said “Are you really? No kidding?” I said “Sure am. My daughter will be 13 in a couple of weeks.”
Well, we spent the whole rest of the visit talking about adoption. Of course, a lot of the things I said were mumbled, muffled and garbled, because my mouth was full of dental stuff, but he’s a dentist–he can interpret well.
All in all, one of the nicest visits to the dentist I’ve ever had.
