I Think I Just Bonded...With My Dentist

I just returned from getting a crown. So, I was in the chair for a really long time (this was the temporary one, where they’ve got to make all the molds & stuff, so it took a while).

My dentist has an excellent chairside manner. I like him a lot. Besides that, dental work really doesn’t bother me. So I’m sitting there, and he’s talking about the weather. He mentioned that the place he had just been to had decent weather–78 degrees and pretty dry. I asked him where he’d been, and he said “Guatemala. My wife and I are going to adopt a baby from there.”

Then he got kind of a funny look on his face, just for a second, like maybe he’d given me TMI or something. Now, it’s no secret here on the boards that I myself am a birthmother. So, I took that moment to share that information with my dentist as well. And I smiled when I said it, which let him know that adoption is a subject that I am most comfortable discussing.

He was just getting ready to poke my teeth with some iron hook things, and when I said “You’re going to adopt? Oh, that’s great! Hey, I’m a birthmother,” he stopped. He put his tools on his lap and said “Are you really? No kidding?” I said “Sure am. My daughter will be 13 in a couple of weeks.”

Well, we spent the whole rest of the visit talking about adoption. Of course, a lot of the things I said were mumbled, muffled and garbled, because my mouth was full of dental stuff, but he’s a dentist–he can interpret well.

All in all, one of the nicest visits to the dentist I’ve ever had.

Dental bonding?
(I couldn’t resist)

Dentists seem to be a rather friendly group of people. The last time that I went to the dentist I ended up talking to my dentist about my problems with my boyfriend. He reassured me that not all men are scum and quite a few other life lessons. I think I ended up inviting him to my wedding that I’m pretty sure is never going to happen but he assures me will… I wonder if I’ll still know him in ten years…

I’ve only ever been to one dentist. I’ve been seeing the same one since I was 4 years old…I’m now 30. I dread the day he retires. :frowning:

The best Dentist I ever knew, Dr. Smith, retired last year. He also had excellent bedside( chairside?) manner and was very adept at putting his patients at ease. I am told the guy who took over his practice is also very good, but since I am now in CA rather than OH, hard to know for sure.
