What a few days it’s been. Friday there was a developers business card slipped into my door with a hand written note on it asking me to call and discuss my house. I was a little curious since the house behind ours has been “under renovation” since we bought our house 5 years ago so I figured I would at least find out who bought it this time and what the plans were. I called him Friday afternoon and made arrangements to meet and hear his offer on Saturday. Saturday we met and talked for a couple of hours and he made his first offer which we rejected immediately. He asked for a counter offer so we talked it over Saturday and decided if they were willing to offer 60k more we really couldn’t see NOT accepting it.
Then we had dinner on Saturday night with a friend who pointed out that if they were going to be tearing up not only the broken down house, but the little house next door where grumpy old guy used to live we REALLY didn’t want to be living there, particularly since I work from home 80% of the time and my husband just accepted a new job (also on Friday) where he will be working from home up to 50% of the time. Counter offer arrived on Sunday and they went up 40k and offered to rent us the house after close for just 50% of our current mortgage/insurance/tax cost. So after the lawyers finish with the paperwork I’ll be a renter again for at least 18 months. They think it will take up to 3 years to get to the point of breaking ground.
I now need a couple of days to sleep though - all the discussions required to get to this point this quickly mean that sleep has been in short supply over the weekend. I’m usually a very methodical person when it comes to big decisions, this has been just a little dizzying. I have to replan everything we had planned for next year now, life is completely different than it was 4 days ago. Mostly good but still very disorienting.
