I think I'm slowly becoming a vegetarian.

I don’t know why it’s happening. It started with red meat - it lost all its appeal. I pretty much only eat chicken. Now I don’t even want chicken. It’s like lately when I eat meat all I can think of is flesh, and it turns me off of it.

I was looking for something to eat this afternoon and I couldn’t even bring myself to eat tuna fish. I settled for pizza. I think it’s strange.

Has this or something similar happened to anyone else?

The same thing has been happening to me lately, too. I gave up veal and lamb years ago, and about a year ago I stopped eating pork and anything else that comes from a pig. Now I primarily eat fish and chicken and veggie burgers and sausage. I still eat ground beef, but last night I had sliced barbecued beef, and I felt ill afterward. I have tried to be a vegetarian before and couldn’t, and I don’t know if I could now, but I feel like I’m heading that way.

::raises hand::

It’s been getting to me more and more. Right now I’ve backed down to just fish and very little of that. My doctor is concerned that I won’t be getting enough protein because I don’t eat beans, but I’m doing okay so far.

I need to try beans again. I haven’t tried any since I was about 7 and remember hating the texture A LOT.

Good, I’m not alone :D. I wonder why this is happening now? I’m hoping it’s something that will pass because I’ve always enjoyed meat. In the mean time I’m going to find some meatless recipes.

My mother in law pretty much gave up meat.

As we age our tastes change. As long as you eat a healthy diet with adequate nutrients there’s nothing wrong with passing on the animal flesh.

i’ve known people to make similar food and diet transitions.

for nonmeat protein intake you need beans and rice in the same meal to have a complete proteins.

I’m going through the same thing. I never loved meat, but could eat it, but lately, the thought of eating it makes me feel ill.

Nah, that was advice from the old days - these days the general view is to have a varied, balanced diet and you should be fine.

Yeah, but that general view is gonna change in a few years’ time. Count on it

Nutritionism is the modern alchemy, IMO.

After reading about the commercial meat industry (see: Omnivore’s Dilemma) I’ve given up factory farmed meat, which has reduced my meat intake by about 90%. The whole eating animals thing doesn’t really bother me, but eating sick, abused, and nutritionally void animals bothers me a lot. I won’t contribute to that system. I do eat a lot of fish, beans, and free-range eggs, though.

After moving in with my vegetarian (for years) boyfriend, it’s become easier to make veggie meals, and I started out by making myself some meat on the side. That gradually decreased, and I’m having the same reaction that you are at this point - I sometimes miss it and those days will take myself out for sushi or a steak, but most of the time I’m just not interested. Even before we moved in, I had kinda lost my appetite for poultry for some reason. Pork and beef are heading that way.

But I don’t think I’ll ever lose my fanaticism for sushi

I went through a phase a couple of years ago where I just lost interest in eating meat. It lasted about a year, and I’m back eating meat regularly again (although I think I go days without actually eating red meat still - I don’t care much if I eat meat or not). I do still eat mostly chicken and fish, though.

Me too - how is pizza (assuming it has cheese on it) any more vegetarian than tuna?

 She said vegetarian, not vegan. I assumed that it had cheese, but no meat.

In general, vegetarians eat no animal flesh, but many of them still consume dairy, or eggs, or honey.

Vegans, on the other hand, tend to eat no animals products at all.

(note - sweeping generalizations above, no discussion of lacto-ovo-pesco-vegetarianism, flexitarianism, etc.)

Thank Og I’m not the only one! I read all the posts saying, “Yeah, I stopped with the cow and pig first and now I only eat chicken and fish. Soon I’ll even be disgusted by that!” And I thought: “Am I the only person who eats pork and beef but never touches poultry or seafood?”

I know you didn’t exactly say that (plus you dig sushi which is the last animal meat I would ever eat), but you are one of the only people I know of who even comes close to my meat preferences.

Pork and beef good, poultry and fish bad. Hey-- it’s just my preference… I don’t find it weird that many folks prefer it the other way around. Can’t we all just get along??? Besides… I find myself heading more and more the OP’s way every day. I’m just sorta sick of the whole animal flesh thing all the way around.

I dont consider myself anything but an omnivore, though the amount and type of meat I eat varies, though it is more carniverous now that mrAru isnt going to sea for months at a time.

back when I essentially lived alone for months at a time, I could go for weeks without eating meat, as I like tofu, and seitan, and eggs as main dishes. I figured that I ate both grains and legumes, and drank milk, ate eggs and cheese in addition to lots of veggies I was covered pretty well.

I dont understand why people make such a production out of being vegetarian nowdays … if you dont want to eat anything with a face, just dont, but dont make such a big production out of it. I used to work with one, at a pot luck she would be all in your face about being vegetarian, and that she wanted to be absolutely certain that my vegetarian minestrone was actually vegetarian. Dudette, I list all the ingredients I put in, do you see the words vegetable broth, beans, pasta, tomatoes, onions, garlic and italian herbs? Do you see I have listed cheese is in the bowl to the side and cooked crumbled sausage is in the bowl to the other side?

I’m an omnivore (and a meat-lover), but two things:

  1. Can we please set aside the moralistic better-than-thou attitude on both sides of this argument? Thank you. (not saying all or even most people in this thread are copping the 'Tude; but it seems just under the surface in a few of the responses. Or maybe I’m the one imagining it. Anyway…)
  2. And the main reason I came in here – To those wondering/worrying about protein: Chick Peas! (AKA Hummous). And if you like stuff that’s deep fried, falafel. Yum

Must have been the same lady I worked with. Sorry if my ground-up rubber band veggie meat balls actually tasted good but the texture was a dead giveaway. Bleaaccch. Wasn’t even close to my normal yummy meatballs.

Most vegetarians I’ve met are not like that.

there are a zillion things that provide protein, but chick peas taste like the stuff picked out of horse hooves. Are you grinding it up into a paste and flavoring the mix?

Edit: I see the reference to Hmmous. That makes sense.

YMMV…

That’s what Hummus is
(ETA: Missed your edit. I guess we’re on the same page then )

And if you soak chickpeas overnight then cook them in well-salted water and season before eating *hot *-- YMMV, but I think they’re quite good that way.

Or the same, but allow to chill and add to a salad.

And of course, if you grind them up and season the mix, and deep-fry the suckers… voila, falafel!
