I was thinking about it earlier today, but have had the same thought before: Meat is just so delicious. I could never stop eating it,…If I ever tried to become a vegetarian, I’d wind up missing and craving it and–being weak-willed when it comes to food–giving in and finding a big, juicy burger to shove in my mouth.
I was a vegetarian for a couple of years, not with any great conviction or reason. Seemed like a good idea at the time, I guess. During a trip to Paris, I saw duck on a menu, figured when else would I get to eat duck in Paris and went back to eating meat.
That was a good twenty years ago but I’m sure I could do it again if I felt like it.
Possibly I essentially am by your feeling on things since I haven’t eaten a mammal in 25 years, just birds and fish.
But yes, I could be a vegetarian and was for about a year and a half at one point. I could easily go back to it, especially if I were a lazy vegetarian where I was vegetarian the 98% of the time it is easy to be one and then didn’t worry about it too much the 2% of the time it is difficult to find vegetarian options).
In fact, that was how my stint as a vegetarian came to an end. Road trip through rural Midwest and getting tired of having to interrogate waitstaff and then still finding on delivery that for some reason there’s meat in every side dish.)
If I had to, then yes, I definitely would. Otherwise, no, because life is too short and enjoying good food, especially various types of meats, is one of life’s favourite pleasures.
On a similar note, I am realy tired of people telling me or suggesting to me that I shouldn’t eat meat, or salt, or butter, or drink alcohol, or cows milk, or blah, blah, blah.
Do your own thing and leave everyone alone.
Btw, my sister is a vegetarian and has two small children. She feeds them meat, beef, chicken, everything. Her reasoning is that when they are old enough then they can decide for themselves.
I’m carnivorous. If it were just a matter of taste, I could eat nothing but meat and be happy. People and doctors and books tell me I have to eat other stuff or I’ll have gross vitamin deficiencies, so I do, just enough to stay alive. If I had to be a vegetarian I’d starve to death.
It would be easier if I didn’t live in a culture where meat was so prevalent at restaurants and markets. I didn’t eat any meat for weeks while in India and I hardly noticed.
Yes. I could, easily. I pretty much go with the flow, and meat is very prevalent to the point it takes effort to avoid it, so I choose the path of least resistance and just eat everything (meat in moderation, tho). Besides, I would not want to become a picky eater.
I tried it for two weeks once. I felt OK, not better, not worse, but it was so boring. l love to cook, and that eliminated so many of the ingredients I like to use. Not worth it. I also don’t believe it’s healthier.
Not really a problem. People who know me would probably be shocked to hear this, but I’ve actually gone vegetarian for a month or two when I was living in a communal living & cooking situation where we defaulted to vegetarian (because it was easier than cooking one meal for the veggies and one for the meat eaters) and it was no big deal for me.
I like good vegetarian food, even good vegan food, and I eat it reasonably often. And I’ve lived on a vegetarian commune for a month and done fine without meat for that duration.
Give me a sufficiently compelling reason and I’d consider eliminating meat from my diet, but I doubt there’s a sufficiently compelling reason.
Fake meats are getting better and better. Some time, try a nice can of “mock duck.” If you prepare it properly, you will have a tough time telling that it isn’t actual duck. Various soyburgers and soydogs are mighty tasty these days.
