I think I've totaled my car.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. At least the lithium-ion battery didn’t break and explode. That’s what happened to the car downtown that the truck hit.

Mine was a 2005, so it had the NiMH battery.

It was a bit of a shock pulling into the empty driveway yesterday. :frowning:

I’m so sorry to hear it :frowning: Spiders are jerks!

Definitely do ask about potential reimbursement for the gas and tires. And when you report the accident, let them know about your injury right away. Ask whether medpay or health insurance is primary in your state. When I had my accident in Illinois, medpay was primary so it would kick in first. I could have visited a chiropractor if I wanted for the neck pain, I just didn’t feel the need.

Ummm, his car was totalled, his mileage won’t vary, it’ll be 0, at least until he gets a new car.

How you feeling today, Johnny L.A.?

What’s everyone got against me & my kind suddenly?

I like spiders. Just not inside the windshield at eye level when I’m driving.

I’m not going to bother with medical. If I go to the doctor he’ll tell me to keep the sprain elevated and to take ibuprofen. I’m doing that already. (OK, I’m not keeping it elevated.) It’s a little better today. The SO asked me if I had any bruising from the seat belts, and I don’t. The only bruise is on my toe joint. No other aches or pains.

Now I’m going to have to decide on a car. I don’t know how much I’ll get for the Prius, but I’ll ask for everything and hope they’re generous. The Jeep costs over twice as much to drive, but I already have it and I only go to Seattle twice a week. Theoretically, I should be able to get another 2005 Prius with all of the available options for what the insurance company gives me. But I suspect it’s like the price of a Jeep Cherokee. The pricing resources say you can buy one for $3,000. But just try to find one at that price! (Cite: Comment from the local dealer.)

If I can find a used Prius (preferable newer than 2005) that’s not too overpriced, I’m likely to get it. My friend who bought the car new didn’t want to wait – there was a waiting list then – and he found that he could get it faster if he got all of the options. It might be difficult finding one like that.

Gas or Diesel cars get almost as good mileage, and they’re different. But I really like the way the Prius drives. I find it weird though, to have an engine running when I’m stopped. The SO likes VW Jettas. I like them too, but I saw a lot of ratty ones when I lived in L.A. that weren’t especially old. I also like the Golf. Other non-hybrids don’t do anything for me.

I could get a new car, either a Prius or something else. I just paid this thing off in March though, and I’d rather not have five more years of payments.

I miss my Porsche 911SC. In L.A. you can find them fairly cheap. Maintenance is a killer though, and their fuel efficiency isn’t much better than the Jeep’s. Besides, there’s not a glut of them up here like there was down south.

I’ll just drive the Jeep until I can figure out something better.

The insurance adjuster called and told me the car is a total loss. The figure he initially gave me was higher than the NADA amount. I told him about the new tires, new rotors, and new front callipers (June); and I said it had keyless ignition (he said they called it ‘remote start’) and the JBL stereo had a 6-CD changer. That bumped it up to $8,095 and some change, after the deductible. They arrived at the price by looking for as-similar-as-possible cars within 150 miles of my home and taking the average.

I think I’ll look for another Prius. A newer one would be nice. (Newer than 2005, that is.) Just not a black one. The SO says it’s too hard to find the car in a lot full of black Priuses. And not a white one, because those look boring. Probably not a silver one, either.

Spiderman: You’ll be happy to know that I like spiders. I don’t let the roaming ones stay in the house, but I don’t kill them.

Wow $8,095 good for you. That is at worst a hefty down payment.

Capt

Wow, to be getting that kind of payout on a car with 240k miles? Good deal.

Seconded. I don’t know about hybrids, but the 250k miles mark is sort of like puberty for regular cars: that’s when they start getting really expensive to maintain and you start looking for people to give them away to.

They average the prices of similar cars being sold locally. Priuses are very popular, and dealers are asking people to sell theirs. I know at least one dealer contacted me by mail, asking me if I wanted to sell my car, and I’ve seen ‘Wanted’ signs in the dealerships. No doubt that helped the settlement amount. Also, as I said (or at least I think I said), this one had all the options. Those counted for a lot.

I have to admit that the last service was rather expensive. I got four new tires, new front brake callipers, new rotors, something on the rear brakes, I think some other stuff, and the regular maintenance. Tires and pads do need replacing periodically, but the callipers and rotors held up pretty well I think. The car has been pretty much trouble free, and the techs never reported anything (aside from tires and brake pads) out of spec. The service reps always pointed out that there were no squawks. Since I kept up the maintenance, I expect I would have been able to go quite a lot farther before anything really expensive needed fixing.

Glad you’re getting what sounds like a good settlement. I never wreck a car with C/C insurance on it, so I never get any settlement at all.*

My “sign” probably has “don’t see me” on it as well. Vehicles run out in front of me, run stop signs at me, and (while it didn’t cause an accident) park so close I can’t get into my car.**

I’ve had at least three accidents that might be called my fault, since the front of my vehicle hit someone else. (one big mid-70’s car–totaled by my hit in the right rear quarter–when I was 16, one 3-wheeler–he hit me, and both kids and both vehicles drove again–when I was 19, and a Ford Escort–she ran the stop sign, I don’t shiv a git what the police report said–when I was 21.) I’ve been rear-ended in the drive-through at McDonald’s, with both my kids in the Jeep with me. (She came up after, and said her foot slipped off the brake and hit the gas. No damage we thought was worth reporting, but I was very achy the next week or two.) The worst was the T-bone strike/hit-and-run. Silly me, I thought once they stopped at the sign, they’d stay stopped long enough for me to get by. Kinda sucked, that I got to be close enough to an operating pair of “jaws of life” that they actually pinched my butt with them, but wasn’t allowed to turn my head to watch.

Apologies, digression is my normal mode of thought. Again, glad you’re essentially OK, and I hope you enjoy hunting for a replacement car.

*Unless you count the one I got for pain and suffering which came from my own Uninsured Motorist coverage after a hit-and-run. Perhaps I should have griped more, but since my own policy’s medical allowance already paid for me to see a chiro for six months (a week after the accident, my hands were going numb–pinched nerve in my neck–and since touch-typing is part of my livelihood, it could have been a really bad situation) and with that medical care, I missed just one hour of work, I didn’t want to be too much of a whiner.

**Really, I don’t know how I didn’t have some damage from that parker–there was less than an inch between the outside edge of their right rear-view mirror and my Jeep’s door. My door itself was thicker than the space between the cars.

The good news is that no one is hurt. Nothing else really matters. Glad you’re both okay.

I didn’t know a Prius could go fast enough to hit someone in the rear. Was it down hill?

Spiderman: Ah, but he has a second vehicle, so his mileage does vary.

One of my old trucks had this “perfect” burn mark because of one of your kin. Little thing, rappelled down through the open driver’s window 'till the moving air pushed her to roughly a quarter inch from my left eye. I was crossing a highway bridge at the time, and the metal guard rail just… barely… touched… Just the high points, but a laser-straight line all down the passenger’s side. I didn’t catch her, but I did swat. Broke her rappelling line and was satisfied that I couldn’t see her any more. Sorry, but I claim a bubble of at least… call it two feet around me to stay bug free, or I won’t be responsible for the consequences.

I’ve found my Prius was faster than many other cars around here. I’m always accelerating faster than Mercedes Benzes, BMWs, and many other kinds most people think as fast and powerful. I can get up to speed in the length of a freeway onramp. They can take a mile or three to accelerate up to speed. And unlike them, the Prius could attain and surpass the speed limit, unlike the others; which seem only to be capable of reaching 5 mph under the speed limit and no more.

Thing about salvage cars, is the big ones, fleet cars, high end, trucks, are rebuild able.

How many miles a gallon you get?

I quit looking after 14-15 on the dash.

I drove an 18 wheeler that got 7, but it was loaded.

Ever hear of

http://www.copart.com/c2/salvage_vehicle_auctions_near_you.html

bet your prius goes for a couple hundred.

Mine is governed at 105 mph

I have to chime in for the Escape Hybrid; they don’t make them anymore so they’re out there used. I love my 2010 (the last year they were offered w/ cloth interior) and even towing overweight on a trailer I get 35 mpg. No problems in the three years I’ve had it.

What did the car ?

Good to hear you’re ok and got a decent insurance offer.

Just curious since I’m in the area, where did it happen? (Hopefully I won’t rubberneck next time I pass the place and cause a wreck myself. )

My first thought was “Again? Johnny has really bad luck with cars.” Then I realized it was a five year old thread that got bumped. :smack:
