Everybody I mention this to thinks I’m crazy.
Someone else please tell me they hear it!
Do you have any random and pointless but strong personal beliefs that everyone gives you weird looks for?

Can’t say I’ve ever noticed that, Br’er, but hey, I think Rickie Lee Jones sounds like Butterfly McQueen in Gone With the Wind. Does that help?
He sort of sounds like Robin Williams in “And She Was”, specifically when he does the “Hey hey hey hey-hey-hey…” part toward the end.
My god, you’re right. I still love her, but you’re absolutely right.
“Miss Scarlette! Miss Scarlette! I don’t no nothin’ 'bout Coolsville!”
“Know,” damn it. “Know.” Sheesh.
If David Byrne sounds like anyone, I think he sounds like Fred Schneider from the B-52s. And I think they both sound a little like Jello Biafra from the Dead Kennedys, although Biafra really sings and the others do more of a sprechtgesang thing.
I will be the first to say yes, the two sound exactly alike. Not only have I noticed it, I’ve never been able not to notice it.
I think Harvey Keitel sounds like James Cagney.
My brother claims that Chris Martin sounds like Alan Partridge.
All English people sound like Alan Partridge. Robin Williams voice is much deeper than David Byrne’s, and Byrne’s is less grating than the parrot from the B-52s.
Well not in the sound alike vein but in the “Do you have any random and pointless but strong personal beliefs that everyone gives you weird looks for?” part of the OP.
God as my witness, Kelsey Grammar as Sideshow Bob mumbles “The horror.” each time he gets smacked in the face (IE the rake scene from the Cape Fear episode). I get shouted down every time I state that.
Yes! He does! Especially on the spoken part at the beginning of Once In A Lifetime. I’m glad someone else finally realizes this.
THANK YOU. When I was a wee one, I always just assumed it was Robin Williams. It wasn’t until some song or another came on the radio when I was ~7 and I exclaimed “I love Robin Williams!” that my stepmother informed me of my error.
I can kinda see the Robin Williams - David Byrne thing.
Anyway, I insist that Drew Barrymore (sp?) is completely unattractive.
I also consider Lovefool by The Cardigans to be one the most perfectly crafted pop songs of all time, but no one takes me seriously when I talk about it.
Same as it ever was! Same as it ever was! Same as it ever was!!!
I have ALWAYS thought this and I’m really, really happy to find someone else who agrees!!!
Well, then they’re idiots. You’re right on the money - the song is amazing.
Real music people can appreciate the talent in any kind of music, and don’t write off songs just because they’re pop.
I’ll elaborate:
[ul]
[li]Great glissando and reverb on opening notes.[/li]
[li]Driving, melodic bass line throughout.[/li]
[li]Excellent use of keyboards in melody.[/li]
[li]Great lead line in second part of verse 1 - not sure if it’s a modulated synth or [/li]a guitar with an effect pedal, but the bending notes are awesome.
[li]Rockin’ rhythm guitar line over “So, I cry, and I pray, and I beg…” lines.[/li]
[li]Awesome theremin-sounding line in the background of same section.[/li]
[li]Awesome rhythm guitar part over “Love me, Love me” chorus.[/li]
[li]Great distorted and dissonant guitar over “I don’t care about anything but you” line.[/li]
[li]Spoken words (“Say that you love me,” “I know that you need me,” etc) over final chorus.[/li]
[li]Seductive and sexy female voice.[/li][/ul]
:dubious: There’s nothing all English people sound like. For a start my SO, being a Yorkshireman, could never be taken for a Souf Londoner. Given the size of the place, I’d say they’re more nuance (and lord knows more attention paid to it) to accents over there than here.
Hey man, don’t judge.
Thank you to those few people who agree with me.
For the record, I think Lovefool is a very nifty song, but I don’t know anything about the technicalities of what makes music “good” other than “I like it”, so that’s about all I can offer.
I do, however, believe Motownphilly is one of the greatest songs of my generation.
Also, ska is awesome.
See, while I appreciate the “kind of,” to me, it’s the kind of thing that just jumps out and bludgeons you over the head with… uh… exactsameness any time you hear either of them. It boggles my mind that there are people (familiar with both parties) that just don’t see this at all.
