Is anyone here a Firefox guru? I just updated to the latest version and now when I exit out of Firefox it doesn’t give me the option to save my windows and tabs, which really blows. Is there a setting somewhere I need to change? (I figured I’d ask in case someone knows exactly where it is, before I spend 30 minutes digging through all the settings myself.)
30 minutes going through settings? More like 30 seconds…
I’m assuming you’re using Windows here.
Open the “Options” screen:
- Click the Orange Firefox button in the upper left
- Click the “Options” button
Within the “Options” screen:
- Under the heading “Startup”, there’s a dropdown menu next to “When Firefox starts:”
- Click the dropdown box and select “Show my windows and tabs from last time”.
- Click “OK” button.
This would have been immediately obvious had you spent even a slight amount of effort on your own.
It’s not her fault that the software did not work properly, and the user should not be expected to have to clean up after Firefox’s mistakes. It’s a regression, and I would report it as a bug.
Furthermore, your snide answer is not even complete. Not even all Windows versions of Firefox have the orange button by default. If she has a menu bar, she needs to go to Tools > Options, and you neglected mentioning clicking on the General tab.
Furthermore, it’s not immediately obvious what the drop down does. The title is rather open ended. I would not expect the user to know to look there. I sure wouldn’t see it before I’d gotten to the point of googling an an answer. And I say that as someone who has been testing Firefox forever.
If you are going post a snide remark, you’d better be sure you know your stuff.

Apex Rogers, let’s avoid snarky remarks like this in GQ. And BigT, there’s no reason to respond in kind. No warnings issued.

Thanks. I’ll try it when I get to work–hopefully it works.
Apart from the setting mentioned above, when you open Firefox 4 there’s a “Restore Previous Session” button on the start page. So I don’t really see this as a regression or a bug.
Start page? Don’t most people set a homepage? Mine is www.google.com, since greater than half the time when I kick up the browser, it’s to do a google search. The only time I see a start page is when I upgrade to a new version.
Other annoyances about the new “and improved” firefox: they moved the freaking tabs to the top (which was reversible but took a google search to figure out, and while the option is nice they shouldn’t have changed the default). You can’t right click a tab to open a new tab anymore, they removed that menu option from the right click menu.
Why the stupid changes? Because even superfluous counterintuitive change is good, apparently. Don’t get me wrong, adding more options is excellent; adding options and changing all the defaults is horrible.
I would have thought that option was for choosing to open a blank page (my choice) or to open your assigned homepage. Me, I’m generally going somewhere specific when I open a new browser window, and so I don’t want it to start loading something else. If I want to do a google search I use the google search box at the top of the screen.
