Most of those people have beards now.
Personally, I switched to using a double-edge razor about five years ago because it was cheaper. For whatever reason, cartridge razors don’t last more than a week for me before they become really scratchy and uncomfortable, and I just got sick of spending the money.
I shave in the shower and don’t bother with any of the stupid badger hair brushes or fancy scented lotions. It took a while to get used to it and learn the best technique, but now I find a DE razor is more comfortable to use and results in a better shave in the same amount of time compared to a cartridge razor. The key is to use a very sharp blade. There are lots of really cheap DE blades out there, that just make it a miserable experience. Feather-brand blades work best for me.
When I travel, I sometimes end up using a cartridge razor because the TSA apparently prohibits DE blades in carry-on bags. Multi-blade cartridge razors like the Gilette Fusion are definitely a bit smoother and less sensitive to technique than a DE. But until the cartridges cost $0.25 apiece, I’ll stick with my DE razor.
