I’ve spent the last few weeks working my way through doenetwork.org, especially their unidentified bodies. Most of the stories are pretty straightforward, but some are creepy.
Okay, I’m not understanding “Queen’s Bay” at all, there’s a kid that gets killed, the mother suicides…
'Kay? So?
Would have to be HEAVILY modified though, a good half of them (that I read at least, still working through it), amounted to “yeah, so, uh, there’s about a 75% chance you’re screwed six ways to Hellday even if you do everything correctly.” There’s clearly some objects that could negate other horrid mutilations, and the needlessly determined could probably find the easiest one and meticulously build a path to get the other ones, but some of them are weird, like the skull dude who won’t let you have his object (boss fight?), which would be fine if it didn’t seem like these guys were so madly powerful the Elder Gods were merely their prophets. On the other hand if it were real finding both the objects of Futility and Masochism seems like a worthwhile endeavor.
I may be slightly… unhinged, but it really is tempting to find the cushiest most easily pushed over holder and go find a comfy asylum to try it in, though I’m more worried about being given “helpful medicine and rest” than being viciously ripped from reality by eldritch horrors as a result.
Well. If they smile with their teeth, I suppose. That person really shouldn’t.
WORST. MOUTH. EVER.
My submission: botflies.
You search for them on Google images, I’m not responsible for the retching. Fun times!
And some creepy lady stole the kid or something. I don’t know. I guess it’s mostly creepy because it’s told in the second person.
The picture’s from one of the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark book.
Creepy pasta’s kind of getting to me.
I’m not sure what the point is of finding the homeless man near Grammercy Park. The downside to seeking him out is dying, and the upside is hearing some boring rambling tale.
Black soldier fly larvae are quite disquieting to watch. The way they crawl up the side of… well, the side of anything, really. I can’t find a vid of them climbing, but if your stomach is strong enoughhere they are wriggling.
Some ghost stories depend on the perspective. HP Lovecraft’s stories of eldritch horror that drive men insane are certainly creepy and scary…but on the other hand, once you start learning more about the Old Ones, a modern reader is just as likely to go, “Okay, so they’re giant space aliens. Dangerous, sure, but is it really something to go insane over?”
The old man illustrates a problem I have with some of these stories, including the Holder series. “You must do this, because anyone who has stayed to listen past midnight is never seen again, at least not in this particular plane of existence.” It just puts me in mind of Jack Sparrow’s line in Pirates of the Caribbean. “No survivors? Then where do the stories come from, I wonder?”
Then, of course, there’s stories like the Bad Dream, and the Clown. (When I first read the Clown, it was an angel statue instead of a clown statue. Significantly more disturbing to me, although I guess clowns are creepy too.)
See, the clown one does creep me out…but it’s so stupid. What kind of robber dresses up as something and then decides to freeze up as though he’s a statue? And why would someone think it’s just a statue? In the middle of a room/outside a WINDOW? Okay, maybe the robber is just an insane man or something. That sort of makes sense. OK, not really.
Well, that explains why I’m familiar with the overall style, at least. Now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that painting I mentioned somewhere on LiveJournal – either as part of a theme or an icon.
 Fucking hell, those pictures were creepy.
And that disgusting big lady MOVES!
Also, the one where the punch line is, “Oh, by the way, they had WHITE BODIES AND RED EYES” is lame. But it still skeeved me. So…what, they’re albinos? And I could see the red eyes thing being necessary but not the white bodies.
Here’s the creepiest picture I’ve seen today: [.myspace.jpg"]sponge](http://myspace.roflposters.com/images/rofl/myspace/1248617344.1248617347.jpg.[roflposters.com).
You want creepy? I’m watching you. Right now.
That’s fantastic! “Why did Ken set the soggy net on top of his deck? I have put blood on her two clean yellow shoes.” Those are almost too far into creepyville for me to believe it’s unintentional…
That’s great, too, but what is that site?
I think the Old Man one did it the wrong way (with a perfect execution being The Holders series), but there’s the implication that you get to hear about interplanar travel, so it’s a curiosity thing, especially since it’s easily possible to survive. They do it wrong just because it sounds so boring without thinking about it. The Holders are similar (what does happen if they come together? What do I find out from some of the holders?) not to mention some of the objects have some pretty cool effects, giving you an incentive to do it.
