"I wanna run throught the halls of my highschool"-Waht's This Song About?

I have heard this song several times on the radio-I assume its a top 40 song (it gets played enough). Anyway, I gather its about a young man who idscovers himself…what’s the rest of the lyrics? And, who sings it?

The title and artist are (I think) John Mayer - No Such Thing. Other than that I can’t help you, sorry.

From memory:

I wanna run through the halls of my high school
I wanna scream at the top of my lungs.
I just found out there’s no such thing as the real world.
Just some lies we have to rise above (?)

Sure John. What?

John Mayer blows. He tries so hard to sound like Dave Matthews.

The lyrics:

“I wanna jump off the top of my high school
I wanna scream at the top of my lungs…”

MHO: This song is about a really immature person who does not understand that adult life is about making choices and compromising between what you want and what you need. Instead, he’d rather “run through the halls” screaming, in a juvenile attempt at a temper tantrum.

[Whiney voice]
I can’t handle adult responsibility. I wanna go back to the days when mommy and daddy took care of everything. Being a grownup is no fun. They lied, they told us when we are grown ups we can do whatever we want…"
[/whiney voice]

I can’t stand John Mayer or his whiney ass album. The music is good, but the lyrics and his voice are just annoying. How insecure is this guy?

See, my guess was that John watched the Matrix and realized that the “real world” was just the world pulled over our eyes to keep us from seeing the truth.

Or he’s singing about how he took a non-traditional path after high school, only going to a bit of college, then pursuing his musical career, which worked out well for him. So he wants to go back to his high school and warn the kids that they don’t have to go to college to succeed, at least not a lot of it. Then he wants to go to his ten-year reunion and show all the folks he graduated with that he did quite well doing it a different way.

Personally, I’d love to see that, or I’d love it if he’d do that. Cause I’ll be at that ten-year reunion in a couple years. We went to Fairfield High School together and both graduated in 1995. (Except I’m not sure if he really graduated. I know he played at the ceremony.) And I’d love to see someone stand up to all the mindless sheep we graduated with and say, “Look how successful I am. What the hell have you accomplished?”

Well when you see him, tell him I said he sucks.

He is trying to tell the high school kids that life is a big shit sandwich that you have to eat. And although everybody tells you the right thing to do is to conform and “stay within the lines”, you still have to eat the shit sandwich. He wants to explain that the “real world” your high school counselor kept telling you about was just a mess of compromises and lies.

I dunno, seems understandable enough to me.

I think that’s what it’s about, too, Biggirl. That there’s no real world, or “so-called right path.” And that afterwards, you want to go back and tell everyone, make them realize just how stupid and pointless it all is.

Hell, I’ve only been out of high school a year, and that’s what I’m tempted to do more often that I’d like to think about.

This song is aimed at high-schoolers? I thought it was for forty year olds.

I don’t know who it’s aimed at (although I’m close to 40 and I like it). In the song he talks about going to his old school and screaming. I just figured he’d be screaming at the kids there.

I’d just like to agree that this song is just a hate-fest on anyone who wants to do anything at all with their life instead of watch TV and eat Cheetos.

I mean, that’s what I do, but I don’t hate other people, because they make the Cheetos and TV. And I don’t bite the hand of the one who feeds me.

“No Such Thing” is John Mayer going, “See? See?!? I’m successful! I made it! I’m a ROCK STAR! I’m the new James Taylor! Look at me!”

Worse is “Your Body Is A Wonderland”: It’s John Mayer going, “See? See?!? I have SEX! I get LAID! I wrote a SONG about how I get LAID!”

I used to like those songs, but they’re really tired. I sampled his album on MSN music and was decidedly unimpressed.

I’d do him in an instant, though.

I guess he must have succeeded then, as Dave Mattews also blows.

Blasphemy.

While it is true I would blow Dave Matthews, Dave Matthews does not blow.
