I want a phone/pda that is capable of trading stocks.

My basic, run-of-the-mill cell phone took a dump today so I’m in the market for a new one. I’ve had the Verizon mobile web for some time, but I want to do more…for instance trading stocks. Are PDAs capable of this? If so, are only certain trading sites available this way? I use sharebuilder now, but can certainly change if I need to.

Thanks for any info, as I’ll be in the Verizon store tomorrow afternoon.

That would be a function of software.

It would appear that both ETrade and AmeriTrade offer an iPhone app.

I kinda figured that the iphone would be able to handle it, but I have Verizon. I’d rather not switch to AT&T if I don’t have to. I read an article stating that the iphone may be switching to Verizon, but I need a new phone tomorrow.

It may be possible through Scottrade. The website says, "No matter where you are in the world, as long as your cell phone or PDA has service, you have complete access to your Scottrade online trading account. Wireless trading allows you to take advantage of rapid changes in the stock market and to buy, sell or trade stock at home, at work, on vacation, or wherever you happen to be at the exact moment an opportunity arises.

Use your Palm-compatible device, WAP-enabled cell phone or Pocket PC to place orders, get real-time quotes, and check balances, positions, order status and transaction history. All for no additional transaction fees!"

All my phones are capable of trading stocks. Just program in the number of your broker, when you want to trade, give him/her a call.

I’m looking for actual advise, thanks.

E*Trade has a stock trading application for the Blackberry:

You dont need a fancy overpriced iphone. Both windows mobile and blackberry have trading apps (heres one). Hell, Ive seen these apps before the iphone was even released.

Ameritrade has a free one here.

You might not even need an app. The “app craze” is an Apple led ripoff. Most “apps” can be programmed as real cross-platform web applications. Who is your online stock provider? Their site may just work with windows mobile or blackberry browser. No overpriced app to pay for.

Do you even need a separate applicaton to trade online? I would imagine a full-featured mobile browser would allow you to trade through your regular trading web-page.

If you want a separate app to trade I would imagine any smartphone would be able to handle the job: that would include Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Nokia S60 and so on. Even a regular web-enabled phone should be able to handle trades through a Java applet. The main thing would be to check with your online trader to see which platforms they support.

And yes the Apple app craze is mostly hype. Apps existed for many years before the iPhone and even regular phones had a great selection of free and easily available Java applets.
