I Want My Anthrax Vaccine!!!!

There is one supposedly available, right? So why aren’t we all lining up to get shot? With all the fear (or paranoia) about this threat, couldn’t that all be assuaged with a simple little prick? Is it too expensive? in short supply? not kosher? What then???

Why is this Anthrax vaccine not being given to the general public if there is a perceived threat of a bio-terrorist attack?

IANAMD, but I think the risk of side affects outweigh the benefits of vaccinating everyone right now. If more cases of Anthrax come to surface, this will probably change.

Also, I believe you don’t just go get a shot - it’s a series of several injections over like a year and a half.

I seem to remember this from a TV news story about anthrax vaccinations in the U.S. military.

Nightline has an anthrax discussion tonight. It was suggested that anthrax should be viewed more as a poison rather than a disease. Also, a certain dose is required before it has any ill effects on you (or me). I don’t feel desirous of getting vaccinated for this yet. I recall a service man (I forgot which military branch, and he may now be a former member) who fought against getting vaccinated. FWIW

There are no known side effects (proven) for the anthrax vaccine. Given the distant chance of getting anthrax, why would you want to subject yourself to a shot every 3 months for 2 years and then an annual booster?

According to 20/20 tonight, there are some FDA problems with BioPort’s new Lansing, MI facility. They are producing vaccine but not shipping it. When it ships, for the next few years they are committed to vaccinating the military. They will only ramp up production to levels capable of providing the public in 3 years.

Vaccine production is a complicated mess. Administration is a pain. It is availible for you in an emergency, so don’t sweat it. If you still are craving it, though, there is an easy way to get it. Enlist.
