Okay, all I want is something very simple: low fat yogurt in individual serving cups that doesn’t have an artificial sweetener. It seems that the individual-serving containers of fruit-flavored yogurt with a low fat content are almost guaranteed to be sweetened with aspartame. The only way to get low fat without the fake stuff is to buy a one quart sized container. I cannot eat these fast enough, however, and always end up throwing away half a quart of watery, moldy yogurt. It’s a waste of food, time and money.
Why is there a presumption that someone who wants to skip some of the fat must be on some calorie restricted diet that precludes them from eating sugar too? Has yogurt really become its stereotype, a food slurped down primarily by the masses of perpetual dieters instead of people who have a simple preference to eat a healthy diet as opposed to a restricted one?
Yogurt is good for the digestive system and has lots of calcium to help grow strong UnbornBabytlw bones. Aspartame, on the other hand, is fakey, lab created garbage that I’m not putting into our systems. And the aspartame versions only save about ten calories compared to the versions with real sugar. So what’s the point?
This bedrest thing isn’t good for me. All I can do is sit here, watch tv, post on the SDMB and think about food. I’ve been thinking about yogurt since Monday, and I can’t find one that suits my desires.
My kingdom (queendom?) for an individual cup of lowfat, no aspartame, vanilla or strawberry yogurt!
Stoneyfield makes a pretty good lowfat vanilla yogurt with no artificial sweeteners. Our local Publix and giant Wal-mart have both begun carrying it, and it’s usually available at health food stores. The price is mostly comparable with similar size branded yogurts, maybe a little higher depending on the store.
Good luck!
I believe Danone makes a low-fat with-sugar yogurt.
Me, I’m doing Weight Watchers, and I like the no-fat, no-sugar variety that my local Weis grocery store has. Normally I can’t stand artificial sweeteners, but this doesn’t taste like it.
However, we’re moving this weekend, and the nearest Weis will be 30 miles away. This makes me sad. Where else am I going to find no-fat, no-sugar Banana Cream yogurt?
I’m with An Arky. Low cost yogurt makers are available–you may want to experiment. Another option: Buy the yogurt you want in a big container, then mix it with fruit, chill it in an ice cream maker, and freeze it in smaller portions. This is good both frozen and re-melted.
I just served frozen yogurt to dinner guests. They raved and went on about it. They were quite surprised to learn that I had made it in a household ice cream maker, using non-fat live culture yogurt, fresh berries from the garden, and a couple of packets of stevia (non-artificial sweetener that doesn’t raise blood glucose appreciably).
Just about every company makes 98% fat free yogurt without aspartame–Breyer’s, Danon, Yoplait, the store brands, you name it. The totally fat free stuff usually has fake sweetener in it, though. And for some reason the non-fruit flavors like banana creme pie or key lime pie or caramel delight is almost invariably only in the fat-free, aspartame version.
I usually only eat plain yogurt–I mix fruit into it (not normally adding any sweetener, btw), but recently have been on a Yoplait custard-style kick. The one I have now is orange creme flavored and does -not- contain aspartame. It does contain sugar and corn syrup, however. And it is low fat (i.e., it uses 2% milk). I really do prefer plain, low fat (not no fat!) yogurt, though.
IMO, one of the best ones for lowfat normally-sweetened single cups of yogurt is Columbo. Can’t usually find it anywhere but the East (RI, MA, NY, NJ, etc), but it’s very yummy.
I sympathize with your quest. Never have understood the point of artificial sweeteners - especially aspartame (to which I am horribly allergic). I’ve been truly distressed by the number of products out there which have both normal sugar and aspartame.
Good luck in finding that strawberry goodness. At the very least, you could try getting single servs of vanilla or plain and some strawberry jam. Mmmm.
Another vote for the Columbo. Their yogurt is always low-fat, and very yummy! Their classic fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt only has 2g fat total and 220 calories per 8 oz cup. (I used to get their fat-free fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt, which had no aritificial sweeteners, but it doesn’t look like they make that any more.)
Other brands I like: Stonyfield yogurts, with no artificial sweetners (comes in 6 oz cups, in both low-fat and fat-free, some organic, and their French vanilla is awesome); Dannon yogurts (many low-fat varieties, come in 6 oz cups, just don’t get anything that says “Lite” or “Light” on the label, their “Fruit Blends” have actual fruit); Yoplait (again, just not the “light”). Also, try the store-brand versions.
I am surprised you are having such a hard time finding good yogurt. We eat a lot of yogurt in my house (I eat at least 6 oz a day and my husband eats 2-3 each day) and we also try to stay away from the “yucky” artificial sweeteners.
BTW: Congrats on UnbornBabytlw! Glad that you are trying to eat healthy and natural for him/her! Good luck.
I’m different. I just want YOGURT in my yogurt. Seriously.
Where does Dannon get off reducing their portion size to 6 ounces and then proudly displaying a banner on their containers that says, “Only 90 Calories!” Well Woo-fricking-hoo. It’s only 90 calories because there’s no damn FOOD in it. And this is a PLUS?
I prefer Dannon. I don’t mind the taste of aspartame and I like the no fat/no sugar kind. Being perpetually in “why-can’t-I-get-rid-of-these-last-five-ass-pounds” mode, I don’t need the extra calories anyway. But how ignorant is it to give you LESS of something and then proclaim that as a BENEFIT? To create advertisements saying yours is better because it only has 90 calories and the competitors has more?
Well, here’s a tip, Dannon, you buzzkilling thieves of all that is light and creamy…if I eat more NOTHING, I get fewer calories. I don’t consider this to be a benefit of eating nothing. For example, I could eat nothing all day and get zero calories. So big deal, you put more nothing in your yogurt and now have less SOMETHING that will instantly turn into ass pounds. Do you know what nothing usually costs? That’s right…less than six ounces of something. Which of course, is the same price as your 8 ounces of something USED to be, until you decided to deprive us all and act like you were doing us a favor.
I hear ya, SexyWriter. Our favorite store brand just pulled the same bullshit, and I’m pretty pissed off.
And I’m with ya, tlw. For a long time I made my own nonfat yogurt (very yummy with a spoonful of all-fruit jam!), but I’ve been lazy lately, so I’ve been buying Stony Field Farms, so let me second a vote for them.
In my experience, you can get lowfat (2%) yogurt with sugar, but all the non-fat yogurt has aspertame, but Stony Fields NF proclaims proudly under the ingredients list, “No artificial sweeteners or other yucky stuff!”
Of course, it comes in 6 oz containers.
