I want the new iPhone

Can some one tell me honestly what the big deal is.

It can stream, so you can keep stuff you plan to watch on it, but when you get that 3AM hankering for The Emperor’s New Groove, you can still access it. If you already have your movie collection on the network, there’s no reason to store it again on the iTV (assuming it can stream well).

I read that, and some of my co-workers point it out to me as well. I’m with tashabot though, they say it is 5 hours, but I have a Sony Ericsson Z525a that claims it has 5 hours of talk time, but I rarely get over 3. Could be my area, but I doubt it.

It is a flip phone, but its screen is much smaller and therefore would use less energy than this thing.

Hey, I’m all for hoping they are right, but I’d hate to spend 600 bucks on this thing only to find out it lasts 2.5-3 hours tops.

I"m guessing they tied it to Cingular because of the aforementioned reasons. Plus, from the website I originally linked to, it sounds like Cingular is going to let them have a lot of control over the phone and its features, which is something Apple is big on. I can’t see Verizon allowing apple this control, for instance. Look at how Verizon cripples the bluetooth on their phones. One thing that wasn’t clear is the pricing: is it $499/$599 with a 2-year contract or just by itself? I’m assuming with the contract, but I can hope.

I looked at the Apple site for the iPhone. It goes through the features nicely. I love the phone features - visual voicemail, ease of merging calls, etc. Very cool. If I could afford one of these puppies, I’d get one. We’ll see. I’ve always wanted a nice phone but none of the Blackberries and stuff appealed to me enough. The iPhone has all the features I’d want, and they look easy to use after a small bit of practice.

The one part of it that does look like a really good idea is the 160 DPI screen. Small screens are bad enough, but when you couple it with a 72 DPI screen, you just can’t see anything.

Did they buy the iPhone naming rights from Cisco/Linksys or is this something that may get ugly?

Apparently that got sorted out in a meeting last night.

It really does look quite awesome. The web browsing seems extremely intuitive and easy. VERY nice. The only thing I don’t like is the lack of tactile feedback mentioned above…hard to dial without looking.

Too bad there’s no way I’m spending $500 on a phone. For that price, I’ll pick up a cheap laptop. The only reason I finally got an iPod (which I love, BTW) is that my Dad got a Video iPod for Christmas and gave me his old 40GB photo iPod (yes, I lucked out big time).

This is probably THE biggest factor. Carriers are generally stingy on allowing manufacturers control over phone design. What Apple did to get this sort of control that other developers like Motorola & LG didn’t do interests me somewhat. Their brand must be very valuable indeed.

They do it because it’s legal in the US. The providers argue that the only way they can insure profitability is by having exclusive deals with the phone manufacturers. Apparently, the concept of providing decent customer service hasn’t occured to them.

I didn’t watch the Stevenote, so I don’t know if this was mentioned or not, but rumor has it that Apple is working to get other providers for the phone, but they weren’t able to iron out the details in time. The problem with it being Cingular is that GSM is too slow for the high speed data services like the CDMA phone companies offer. Supposedly, everyone’s slowly dropping GSM, but I haven’t heard anything certain on it for a couple of years now, so I don’t know if that’s still accurate or not.

I do know that’s a helluva nice looking phone and if they come down in price, I’ll probably get one. I wonder why Apple didn’t decide to become a “Virtual phone service provider” like Virgin and a few others have done.

And me, while they’re at it.

How does constant friction from, say, the fabric of your pocket affect it? How easy is it for it to be scratched or dented?

Go to http://apple.com/iphone, and watch some of the video demonstrations.

If you don’t think that’s cool, no one is going to convince you.

There’s nothing really new, if all you do is compare features with other smartphones. The difference is the user interface - it’s just freaking amazing.

A decent parallel is the iPod. It certainly wasn’t the first MP3 player to market by a long shot. But the design and usability rocketed it to #1.

That said, I’m iffy on the virtual QWERTY keyboard myself for text entry. Since it’s running a slimmed down Mac OS, I don’t know why they couldn’t implement some voice recognition technology to “transcribe” voice messages into text.

I don’t know, but I’d bet they would have a nice microfiber carrying case with the apple logo stenciled in for an extra 100 dollars.

While we’re at it, what was the big deal with the iPod? I’ve heard more people whine about the design than I’ve heard people sing its praises.

As an Apple authorized tech, i have to say…

Meh… big frakkin’ deal…

once again, the Jobsian R.D.F. is in full effect, ues it’s a stylish looking, distinctively Apple implementation of the multifunction telecom device, and the cool factor/gadget factor is off the charts, but i just can’t work up any enthusiasm for this one

First off, it’s a bloody cell phone, and I HATE phones, you have to enter into a two-year contract with Cingular, and who knows what the monthly fees for that will be, heck, i barely use my basic Verizon cell as it is, in the past 3 months i’ve made maybe two calls on the thing, it’s for emergencies only

make an iPod Widescreen model (an iPhone minus the phone) and i’d be all over it, but as long as it’s got a cell phone in it, pass…, i’m not entering into a two year contract for the priviledge of carrying around a device i won’t use (the cellphone part, that is)

however, there are seriously cool features on the iPhone, the motion sensors, touchscreen, and the fact that it’s running OS X is killer, heck, all they need to do is scale up the size of the iPhone and they’ll have their tablet computer, now that i’d buy

Rumor has it that the case is zirconia. Which would make it well-niegh invulnerable if true. They should have called it “The Tick!”

How slimmed down is it? I got the impression it’s the full OS X.

It’s nice; certainly seems like most of the functions have been nicely polished - it’s just polish though, not really a revolution - in any case, I think it will be a big hit. I don’t particularly want one though.
