Is there anywhere online that can get me started on the basics? I have an electric guitar but I cant play it.
just go to a search engine, type in your favourite song with which you know there is a cool sounding repetitive riff and then put the word ‘tab’ on the end of the song and you should get a whole list of sites, find one which is good use that, there are literally hundreds here is my fav www.ultimate-guitar.com, a massive site.

In my opinion, the best site to learn guitar is Stone Dragon’s. www.zentao.com/guitar. Good luck, I’m just starting as well.

Do you have to learn to play an acoustic guitar before you get an electric one?
I hope to get my guitar next year.
You can learn to play guitar on either an acoustic or electric, it doesn’t matter.

I taught myself to play by picking one song that sounds kinda simple, then I found the tab on it and butchered the hell out of the song until I mastered it. Do that with several songs then you’ll get the hang of it. Then you can expand and learn many songs.
The only difference is that electric strings are a lot easier to use I’ve found. I learned on an accoustic for a couple of years and then when I bought an electric was astounded at how easy bar chords are on it.
yea electric strings are softer but its actually better to learn on an acoustic because mistakes are more obvious allowing you to keep going until it sounds right, plus your fingers build up more calis(sp?) sooner, and you want annoy people with the sound!, and when you move to electric you’ll improve very quick. But it really doesn;t matter, i started more or less on both, and that was about 2 years ago, and im pretty much the same level on both, just learn the songs you like.
I do not really want to annoy people, with lousy playing, as much as i will annoy them by learning all of my favorite Crowded House songs first.
