I want to name a Starship after a Redshirt

I don’t remember Yeoman Rand ever getting killed.

Yeoman Rand’s entire career got killed.

The U.S.S. Garibaldi works.

I think it would be cool to commemorate the first redshirt.

The first named redshirt to be definitely killed onscreen was Lt. Matthews, who was killed in the episode “What Are Little Girls Made Of?” when the android Ruk pushed him off a cliff. This goes for production order and airing order.

I say definite, because, if we go by airing order, there’s a debatable earlier redshirt death. In Charlie X, the third aired episode, a crewmember named Sam, who was wearing a red sparring suit, was “vanished” by Charlie. It is unclear if the Thalosians restored him when they fixed everything else Charlie did. Plus, he may not have been a redshirt, as he was not in uniform. In the novelization, he was explicitly stated to be restored to life.

Note, a lot of other officers died before Lt. Matthews. Going by production order, the first onscreen death was Lt. Lee Kelso, a navigator who was killed by the helmsman Lt. Gary Mitchell, who had gone mad with power upon acquiring paranormal powers. Five others died before Lt. Matthews.

But didn’t she end becoming an officer? I seem to recall her being in most, if not all of the movies. Or am I being whooshed?

She was in TMP, for sure. She was behind the transporter console when that Vulcan dude got his atoms scrambled while trying to be beamed up. She may have been in some others (I think she was on the space station at the beginning of SfS, but I can’t say for certain).

How many were killed by the Salt Vampire? I remember at least two.
