I never said that everyone should be glued to the television, weeping on their knees.
I don’t give a shit if you think that news orgs are exploiting this for ratings, I’ll agree with you on that.
Of course people can choose to mark the day anyway they wish.
Some people actually don’t care about 9/11, or want to move on already.
This has nothing to do with my opinion that I find it tasteless to whine about specials pre-empting a fucking Star Trek episode, on the first anniversary of a world altering event that affected millions of people.
OTOH, i am actively trying to advoid watching WTC pictures, as i don’t want to desensitize myself to the images. I’m sure i’ve seen them at least twice a week for the past year, and even purposly not looking for them i still find them constantly. I fear that people forget that people died, and i don’t want any part of that.
I’ll try, but my skull is unusually thick today.

And I don’t think anyone said you did. Your first post was pretty non-specific about what you were upset at the OP for. I tried not to read too much into it and if you believe I implied that you meant “everyone should be glued to the television weeping on their knees” then I apologize.

Well, except by watching Star Trek: Enterprise that is. Because that option was taken away by the programming manager at the station in Jonathan Chance’s area.

Honestly I was disappointed in JC’s attitude as well. I think one of our athiest members(sorry I don’t remember which) summed it up very well when asked why they weren’t speaking out against the outpouring of public prayers and heightened religious atmosphere not long after 9/11. “I’m not being silent becuase I believe in the Christian god. I’m being silent because I happen to know that a lot of other people DO and they need him right now.”
Personally I was all prepared not to see an episode of Enterprise last night and I would have been fine with it if my local station had pre-empted it. I don’t need the reminder to remember the events of 9/11/01 or strengthen my resolve to see justice done, but others might and I’m not going to begrudge them that. I might personally feel that I would have rather have watched Enterprise, but if someone else gets benefit from the anniversary special then I’ll gladly forego my Enterprise fix.
Mmmm. Personally, I don’t think it does any good to replay what happened last September. I don’t think we’ve forgotten, and frankly, it would be nice to be able to escape the media bombardment.
** Tars ** is absolutely right: the constant repetition of these images cheapens them, and is also counter-productive. People who were seriously traumatized by the events are not likely to profit from seeing them replayed over, and over, and over again. And the rest of us aren’t, either.
I’m behind you, JC - it does not imply any callousness to the horrible events of 9/11 to not want to watch a “treacly” (good word, btw) concert. I’m always annoyed when things I’d like to watch get pre-empted, even for something that is intended to be beneficial.
Just because someone would rather watch a cute little fantasy story than a heartfelt tribute doesn’t mean he’s a Commie subversive.
And that wanna-be sex scene in the de-contamination chamber gave me shivers. Yeah, baby. Grease me up.
Actually in re-reading JC’s original rant it seems that the programming that was being shown was less important than the fact that the station had been advertising the intent to show Enterprise and then didn’t. Apparently JC missed the season’s opener and was really stoked about getting this chance to see this episode. Every indication given by the station indicated that this was indeed going to happen and then…
It’s like coitus interruptus. Your SO has been teasing you all week with the promise of a passionate night together. You get together, get nekkid and start steaming up the windows and your SO’s PDA fires off an alert that reminds them they’re supposed to volunteer at the local hospital that night, and they’re already late so they just have to jump up and run. You know it happens, and you can’t really hold a grudge, but DAMN IT HURTS!
Cheers, ** World Eater ** . Frankly, I’m delighted to see varying opinions, all stated intelligently. Bloody refreshing! So, regarless of whether I agree, you can be damn sure I’m glad to see a reasonable discussion.
See, ** JC ** , I * knew * you weren’t a Commie. And take comfort: if Jeff Olson can be trusted (I’m sure he can!), looks like maybe you can catch Enterprise after all. It’s worth it for the Vaseline alone. After all, who has anything to do on a Saturday night? Not me!
Kn(get me out of here before I say something stupid. Oops! Too late!)ckers
Oh yes he did! Pickard got laid a couple of times. He was on that planet that everyone goes to for vacations, “Raisa” I think it’s called. Anyway, he meets this woman there and, and…
OMIGOD! Someone please, KILL ME!!!
Yea, but later Q snatched her up and took her on a sight-seeing tour of the galaxy. I much prefered the episode where the metamorph(she can sense a man’s needs and desires and molds herself into the perfect woman for that man. If the man is a hornball, she will be too, if he’s a brilliant mind, she’ll be brilliant too, etc) was supposed to be given as a concubine from one world to another but accidentally opened while in transit on the Enterprise. Guess who she latched onto!
That would pretty much sum it up. I suppose if they’d mentioned it over the week or even prior to broadcast or had it in their schedule I wouldn’t have minded so much. C’est la vie et c’est la guerre, right?
But to build it up and then pull the ol’ bait and switch just ain’t right.
And then they have terrible content on this ‘tribute’ is just sort of an insult atop injury.
And I, for one, will NOT be able to see it Saturday night because I’ll be away. I am, for well and good, screwed blued and tattoed this time.
