I feel the distinction is that the positive gun news thread is essentially a thread for reporting news items. Now I’ll grant that being able to choose which news items about a topic get posted can be used to advocate a position. But in theory, it’s not offering opinions.

Again, this is factually wrong. The mods have explicitly said that questioning the facts of a claimed “positive” news story and offering opinions about whether it is actually good news is allowed.

That’s not the way that I have moderated that thread, and it’s not the way that the thread is supposed to be moderated.

You are allowed to question the facts of the news item and whether or not it actually was a “good” news event or not. Questioning whether something was or was not self defense or not is definitely allowed in that thread.
