welp, goes to show that just 'cos you’re an adult, don’t mean you’re grown up.
This was in Alaska. Kids were wearing light jackets, school shoes, etc. I don’t know WTF the parents or the scout leaders were thinking. I remember hearing kids crying all night from the bitter cold because of inadequate sleeping bags.
It was Alaska and the kids didn’t know how to dress for the cold!?!?!:eek::eek:
Kids don’t always plan ahead properly. That’s why the adults are supposed to. My BSA training emphasized that the adult role is health and safety.
It was Anchorage, not Nome. City kids are city kids the world over. My normal dress in winter as a kid was jeans and sneakers and a warm coat. And winter camping was not a normal activity.
I was Den Leader for my son’s den for two years, and it was a huge pain. The parents were, for the most part, whiny complainers that second-guessed all my decisions, complained about the activities, criticized me, etc. etc. etc.
Most of it was extremely petty, and the parents that complained the most were also the ones that participated the least. After two years, I’d had it.
FWIW, I agree. My son’s troop was similar. Whatever the national guys decreed with regard to atheism or sexuality had no practical impact on us for the reasons you note: no one ever even mentioned it. And it wasn’t come sort of known “we never talk about such things” policy. It just never came up. I’m certain our troop had gay kids.
IMO, the troop reflects the values of the leadership, and if he buys all that stuff, then it becomes an issue and he has the national stuff as a club he can use. If he doesn’t care, it doesn’t come up.
What?
Just because someone has reached the age of 18 (or 25, or 55) doesn’t mean they have matured emotionally to a stage that we normally associate with adult behavior.
I’m sorry, I should have been more clear. I was wondering who the quote was directed at… the OP or those at the upper echelon of the Boy Scouts?
Probably at the OP’s committee, that doesn’t want to follow things like “boy-led” or do any recruiting.
I hope so. It just came out as slightly off, so I was hoping for clarification.
