I Won Money!

Well, I just got home from a weekend trip to Mohegan Sun. There were four of us girls who went. It was kind of a bachelorette party for one of my coworkers. I brought $250 with me for gambling and food and I came home with $490. At one point, I actually had $960 because I won $800 on one machine and $160 from the other machines I played. I had so much fun. In a way, I’m kind of dissapointed in myself for not keeping the money but I won it so early in the night that I would have just been watching my friends gamble for 5 hours. I would have left with twice as much as I went with but I bought a mug for Mr. Congo and a pen and keychain for myself.
The best part though was that I made two new friends. My coworker is one of my good friends and she brought her cousin and another of her friends. We all got along so well and had so much fun that we’re going to start planning for our next trip.

The one downside of the night was the club. This new club just opened there and it was LAME LAME LAME. This is pretty bad coming from me since I don’t even like clubs and I was the designated driver so I wasn’t going to be drinking anyway. They have a dress code and apparently my sweater wasn’t whorish enough for them. They did let me in though. It cost $15 per person to get in and my friends each paid $5 for 1 beer! Anyway, we sat down in a booth next to the dance floor and we were told that the dance floor and the booths were reserved and we’d have to move to the other room. The other room is called “The Bedroom”. It’s all red and there’s a huge round bed in the middle of the room. There’s nowhere to dance and the music sucked. Everyone was just sitting there talking. What’s the point of a club if you can’t even dance? So, we stayed long enough for my friends to finish their beers and then we left. We weren’t even in there for 10 minutes.

Just in case you’re wondering, my coworker brought $190 and left with over $200. Her friend came with $100 and left with $300. Her cousin only brought $90 and she didn’t leave with anything but she has a lot of fun watching people gamble and that was her main reason for going so she still had a good time. She protected us form ourselves. We’d give her the money we wanted to keep and she kept it in her purse.

As for the hotel, we stayed at the Ramada a couple miles away from the casino. We got a room with 2 queen beds and it only cost us $30 each for the night. The room was really nice and the continental breakfast was the best I’ve had at a hotel. The parking was free so in all, I only spent about $40 for this trip (food included).

All in all, it was a great trip. I had so much fun and I can’t wait to go back. I would recommend it to anyone in the MA-CT-RI area who’s looking for a quick weekend trip which doesn’t cost a lot. The casino is very cool. The different sections all have different names. My favorite is the Casino of the Sky.

I also had a system that worked pretty well for me. I kept my playing money in one cup and anything I won stayed in another cup. When I was all out of playing money, I cashed in my winnings and gave it to my friend in $100 increments. I kept anything that didn’t total $100 and then I’d play again. After a while, I took back some money so she was holding $400 for me and I played with the rest. It went against my system but I was having fun and I was up from where I started so I didn’t worry about it. Actually, the cousin is the only one who didn’t use that system and she’s the only one who didn’t win anything.

One side note for those of you who’ve never been to a casino: drinks are free if you’re gambling.

I dont gamble, but Mr Aru and I live about 20 minutes from Mohegan Sun. We like to eat there - the Big Bubbas BBQ is fantastic. Huge servings and they dont play around…the napkin is a hand towel=). Tuscany is exceedingly good food, but incredibly expensive. The fast food stands in a sort of food court have good food, but servings are small and seriously expensive for what you get. All in all, most of the excellent food in the area is found there…

The rooms are like $250US a night for the cheap ones=\ but there are cheaper hotels scattered around=)

We wanted to eat at Big Bubba’s but the line was too long. My friends especially wanted to go there after they saw two men drinking some kind of alcohol out of a fish bowl  . We just ate at one of the food courts. I got 2 slices of pizza and a medium soda for $10.
We knew we could find a cheaper hotel if we stayed somewhere outside of Mohegan. That’s why we went to the Ramada. It was only $120 for the room, split 4 ways.
I very rarely gamble. This was only my second time. I’d gone to the Casino de Montreal about 5 years ago and it was nice but not as nice as Mohegan.
One thing that surprised me was the cost for cigarettes. It was $7.50 for a pack of Marlboros. I can get those for $5.00 in Massachusetts and that’s with paying the tax.

Congratulations on doing so well!!

I have a few stupid questions to ask, so bear with me:

I’ve never heard of the name Mohegan before; were you at a native american casino on reservation lands?

If so, did the decor in the casino have anything to do with native american themes?

What was the entertainment like in the lounges?

Were the employees in the casinos native american?

Thanks for your answers.

There is a not too horrible soundtrack to the site when it loads in.

Hope this helps=) will check back to see if there are any more questions. It is MUCH nicer and less cheesy than foxwoods miami vice/vegas fake indian kitsch.

the pictures dont really show you the total tackiness of the decor. I can personally do without a giant lucite statue that gets rained on periodically.

Well, medstar, since aruvgan gave you the links, I’ll give you my own opinion.
Mohegan Sun is on the Mohegan reservation.
I didn’t see a single obvious Native American there - playing or working. But, it’s possible they were of Mohegan descent and just didn’t look it.
The decor is beautiful. It changes from room to room, to cover elements and seasons. As I said, my favorite was the Casino of the Sky. There’s one section where the roof looks like a clear night sky. The food court where we ate had all the phases of the moon on the ceiling.
All the entrances have their own artwork and most of it is truly beautiful (and yes, Native American themed).
As for the entertainment - there was one section that had a stage and this band that sounded like a Spanish Polka band. Not my favorite type of entertainment. I didn’t look for any other shows or anything. We didn’t have enough time for that.
Now that you got me thinking about entertainment, I realize that I have no clue whether there was background music or not. The atmosphere of the casinos is so addicting that I wasn’t aware of much else. Some of the casinos were louder than I like but the Sky casino was actually kind of quiet.

I’m interested if you have any accounts of your favorite slot or poker machines you may have played (their names, if you have them), and what you found fun about them.

I’m doing a study on how to make them more addictive.

(Just kidding - see this.)

Well Ambushbug, I have two favorites. My most favorite is of course the one I won $800 on. I don’t remember the name but it was a $5 machine. It had flaming sevens and diamonds. I mainly like it because I won though. Not because there was anything spectacular about it.
My favorite because it’s fun - I also don’t remember the name. It was a .50 machine. It took 1-3 coins. There were the 3 reels for the main prizes and then there was the 4th bonus reel. I love that machine. I think I was using it for at least 3 hours. I love the bonus reel. It had plus 10, plus 100, replay and then the multipliers. I like the replay because you never know how many times it’s going to replay the spin.
None of the other machines really made a positive impact on me. I hated the ones with like 9 or 13 different pay lines. They were too confusing and you had to put in too much money to win anything.
I love the fact that all the machines have a change button you can press so you don’t even have to get up if you need change.
I wish they took bills smaller than $10. That was very annoying.
My only other problem with the machines has to do with playing money and winning money.
If I put in a $20 bill and I get credits to play, all my winnings are added in to my playing money. The only way I can find to keep them separate is to make change and play a few coins at a time. It wasn’t a major problem. Just a minor annoyance.

From your descriptions, it seems that the “good” machines weren’t made by my company. We make mostly the 9- and 20-line type, which do give the player the option of playing them as single or three line machines.

The change/service button is standard.

Most likely it’s the casino’s choice as to what bills to allow their bill acceptors to accept; they’re capable of accepting $1, $2, and $5 bills as readily as the higher denominations.

The annoyance you found is the casino’s joy of the credit meter, which started finding its way onto slots around 1985. Before, a player could run a roll of quarters through a machine, afterwards scoop whatever was paid and go to another machine - gambling books of the era cautioned players against reaching down and playing from the winnings. Lather, rinse, repeat.

That is exactly how I played, hence the annoyance. I solved the problem by putting in my $20 and then “accidently” hitting the cash out button which is convienently (sp?) next to the spin button

I saw a lot of people with their Player’s Club cards attached to their wrist at one end and the 9-13 line machines at the other end. They didn’t seem to move. I think their butts were growing roots into the chair.

At many venues, the machines no longer take or dispense coins. They print a barcoded ticket when you cash out for whatever you had on the credit meter - the bill acceptors on other machines take them as easy as cash - to get cash you have to take said ticket to a cashier or use an ATM-like machine.

If faced with such a situation, I suggest you count your plays. At least a barcode ticket makes it easy to transfer your credit balance from machine to machine

This is reminding me of a show I once saw about gambline. It had tips for not losing your shirt.

  1. Don’t use the spin button. Pulling the handle takes more effort so it will help you play slower.
  2. Keep you winnings and playing money apart and
  3. Don’t play your winnings.
  4. Don’t put a bill into the machine. It takes longer if you put coins in. Also, you see the money leaving you more so it makes more of an impression.
I think there may have been more rules but these are the ones that stuck with me. I didn’t use them when I went to Montreal and I lost all my money. I did use them on Saturday and I came home with more money than I left with. I would definitely suggest any one trying to “make” money at a casino use them too. If you’re just going to have fun - don’t worry about it.
