No, but being the kind of prat who feels the need to go on at length about those things_like being well read and educated are unique at this board_ and who stubbornly insists that those who do not agree with him must be wrong and ignorant definitely would qualify. See, “boring” is an opinion about how much a given topic interests the person expressing the opinion. Only an psuedo-intellectual twat would try to tell somebody that he was wrong or ignorant for not sharing said twat’s interest.

I’ve seen iamnotbatman in only two threads, but this relatively new poster is definitely a bright and shining star in the constellation “Tumidus the Douchebag.”

Let me start you off. Here are two of my posts from that thread that explain my position:

Maybe it’s just me (is it?) but if someone walks out of “Citizen Cane” saying “boooring”, it irritates me. If someone walks out of the Louvre and says “boring”, it irritates me. If someone walks out of Bach’s Goldberg Variations and says “boring”, it irritates me. And if someone says “Shakespeare? Boring,” it irritates me. Why? Because all of my experience tells me that this person is ignorant, and apparently totally uninterested in understanding the cause of the dissonance between his own perception and the encomiums from those who spend years learning to appreciate it. Over and over again in my own life I’ve found whole worlds open up, worlds that previously seemed “boring” only because I was too ignorant to appreciate them. It just seems so tragic that others can be incurious enough as to dismiss whole universes of wonder.

I think that is because they are “lacking in knowledge or experience,” off all of the connections that make it interesting. People aren’t stupid – there is a reason they find some things interesting – that reason is just as accessible to one person as it is to another, if they are able to gain the knowledge and experience that allows them to make the connections and unify their understanding of the subject enough for it to “make sense.” In my own life, if I “don’t get” why someone finds something interesting, and I have the time, I go buy a book about it, do some research, buy a “Teaching company” lecture series, etc, and without fail I come out the other side fascinated by the subject. I have no doubt the same would be true for British Military firearms and the British Empire.

You, on the other hand, only offered one-line insults. Pseudo-intellectualism, to me, is terse smugness in the face of attempts to actually explain one’s position intellectually. It is exemplified by your own posts in that thread.

S/He seems like a tamer version of BigT, always trying to explain and analyze everyone’s posts…like someone appointed him/her the spokesperson for the thread. There’s nothing wrong with appreciating the (so-called) finer things in life. IMHO, it’s when you take that step of judgmentally looking down on and sneering at those who don’t that you turn into a douchebag. And yes, that includes being “irritated” with them. That attitude cannot exist without an implied feeling of “I am better than you because I like better things than you do”.

I thoroughly enjoy Citizen Kane and Shakespeare and other things I can’t be bothered to list right now. I have many friends and relatives that do not. They are still good people - every bit as good as me, if not better. I have learned a lot from them about various aspects of life, and I respect all of them.

If there is a mark of someone who is more “enlightened”, or however you want to phrase it, I suspect it involves a certain level of humility and respect for those around them, regardless of circumstance or other shallow measures.

ETA: This ended up being far more serious than I intended. I also like boobs.
